The facts📌
1. Immune protection doesn’t “expire” at 6 months
After six months, babies are:
-Crawling
-Putting everything in their mouths
-Entering childcare
-Being exposed to more viruses
And breastmilk continues to deliver: antibodies, immune cells, anti-inflammatory compounds, antimicrobial proteins, prebiotics that shape the gut microbiome.
Breastmilk is biologically active.
It doesn’t switch off at six months.
It adapts. When a baby is exposed to pathogens, maternal immune responses can alter milk composition to provide targeted protection.
2. Complete nutrition
Breastmilk meets all nutritional requirements for the first 6 months of life.
From 6–12 months, alongside solids, it continues to provide substantial energy, high-quality fats, protein, bioavailable micronutrients, and essential fatty acids for brain development.
It remains a nutrient-dense, living food designed specifically for human infants.
And even beyond 12 months, it still contains immune factors, hormones, growth modulators, and protective compounds.
It doesn’t suddenly “turn into water.”
3. Designed for long-term feeding
The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding up to 2 years and beyond, alongside complementary foods.
That recommendation exists because the biological benefits continue.
So feed for as long as it works for you and your baby.
And rememeber, what matters most is:
Is the mother supported?
Is the decision informed?
Is the family functioning well?
Science supports continued breastfeeding if desired.
But science also supports maternal wellbeing as central to child wellbeing.
