Another full house at the Buck today for our monthly community seminar. Today’s seminar is about Advancements in the Prevention of Cognitive Decline with Buck Professor, Lisa Ellerby, PhD. As we get older, many people face brain-related diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s which can seriously affect memory, movement, and overall quality of life. Dr. Ellerby is working to uncover what causes these conditions as we age—and more importantly, how to stop them. Using cutting-edge tools like stem cells made from patient samples, genetic analysis, and even gene editing (like CRISPR), she’s digging deep to understand what goes wrong in the brain and finding new ways to treat or prevent these diseases. Register for our next seminar on March 4 with our CEO Eric Verdín, MD. Registration opens today at noon on our website under events.

NEW BUCK PODCAST EPISODE dropped today! In this episode, Eric Verdin, CEO of the Buck Institute, and Stanford University’s Dr. Tony Wyss-Coray discuss the groundbreaking science of brain rejuvenation through heterochronic parabiosis, a process where young blood factors are shown to restore cognitive function and potentially extend lifespan. Moving from the lab to the clinic, they explore the next frontier: Proteomic Clocks. By measuring thousands of proteins, scientists can now determine the biological age of individual organs, allowing for the detection of Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases up to 15 years before symptoms appear. This shift toward high-precision organ tracking marks a new era in preventative geroscience and personalized longevity.

At the Buck, our breakthroughs are powered by people. Faces of Discovery, a monthly installment to the Buck Blog, introduces the scientists unraveling the mysteries of aging and pioneering ways to help us all live better longer.

This month we're featuring Taylor Valentino PhD., a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Winer lab. He studies how diet and exercise effect the immune system during aging. Read more about his research, how he got to where he is today and where he's hoping to take his research in the future.

Congrats to the Buck’s Tracy lab for their new paper in Molecular Neurodegeneration. The work describes a new mechanism for how synapses deteriorate in disease and related dementias. The research shows that tau oligomers trigger progressive synapse decline and deterioration in human iPSC-derived neurons. The team developed a new tool that maps dynamic postsynaptic changes after acute tau oligomer exposure; technology that was combined with electrophysiology and monitoring of synaptic structures over time. The team found a cascade of events caused by tau oligomers that drive synapse fate toward either functional impairment or loss. We’re proud of the work. Read our news release here:

Friday was a very special day at Buck as we celebrated the installation of Paul F. Glenn’s bust in our atrium—an honor made possible by our longstanding partnership with the Glenn Foundation and its CEO Leonard Judson. We’re deeply grateful for their vision and support, and for the inspiring words shared by Mary McEachron on the history of the Buck, along with Paul Glenn’s instrumental role in it. Thank you, Paul!
