We love this story from our Sonoma team! It captures the essence of hope, perseverance, and connection that our services provide.

For the past four years, Roy had been unable to see his brother, James, due to medical challenges and his transition from living independently in his own apartment to a skilled nursing facility. During that difficult time, Roy also misplaced his brother’s phone number and address, making it nearly impossible to reconnect.

After years of searching and continued determination, the missing information was finally discovered... tucked away in a photo album. Although the brothers were able to reconnect by phone, hearing challenges and their overwhelming excitement to talk with one another made it difficult to fully understand each other. Still, their joy of reconnecting was undeniable.

This holiday season, Buckelew staff helped plan a long-awaited reunion between Roy and James. Seeing these brothers reunite after four long years was nothing short of magical! They exchanged Christmas presents, shared lunch, embraced one another, and filled the day with love and laughter. With a bright smile, Roy often repeated, “This is the best Christmas ever! I light up like a Christmas tree.”

Moments like these remind us why our work matters. And we’re incredibly grateful for the community that helps make this possible!

Our incredible community partners do incredible work!

Today, Sonoma County Board of Supervisors adopted a Gold Resolution proclaiming January as Human Trafficking Awareness Month. District Attorney Carla Rodriquez recognized Katrina Phillips from the Sonoma County Commission on Human Rights, as well as our partners at Verity, the Family Justice Center Sonoma County (FJCSC), Redemption House of the Bay Area, and the Victims Services Division of the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office.

We are so lucky to have such a strong network of care available in our community. 💜

On a June night in 2003, in the depths of addiction and depression, JD Schramm climbed the Manhattan Bridge and jumped. “I didn’t believe life was worth living.”

Somehow, he survived — and that moment became the start of an ongoing journey of recovery and purpose.

Today, more than twenty years later, JD is alive, sober, married, and a father of three. JD serves on the Board of Directors at Buckelew Programs because he knows what it means to be given a second chance, and believes everyone deserves that same opportunity to find safety, healing, and hope.

When you support Buckelew, you make this possible for thousands of people like JD.

This year alone, Buckelew has answered over 23,000 calls on the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, provided housing and recovery services for more than 1,800 people to help rebuild their lives, and offered counseling and community support to more than 1,100 people across Marin, Sonoma, Lake, and Mendocino counties.

Thanks to our generous and visionary partners, Sutter Health and the Lindskog Foundation, who have joined together for a $250,000 matching challenge through December 31. Donate: https://buckelew.org/buckelew55/

Our Story

Buckelew Programs helps people with mental health, addiction, and related behavioral health challenges lead healthier, more independent lives, strengthening families and communities in the process. Founded in 1970, Buckelew Programs opened Marin County’s first 24-hour residential mental health treatment facility, which offered supported housing for six adults. Today, we serve nearly 10,000 people each year throughout Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Mendocino, and Lake counties, making us the North Bay’s largest provider of community-based mental health and support services and a critical component of the area’s healthcare safety net.
