In many matriarchal and Indigenous cultures, elders guided death. They understood the rhythms of the body. The emotional shifts. The spiritual transitions. They knew what to say… and when silence was the medicine. Modern culture often separates us from elders. Replacing lived wisdom with systems, protocols, and procedures. But sitting at the bedside has taught me this— Experience carries a kind of knowing that textbooks cannot replicate. Not everything can be studied. Some things must be witnessed. Felt. Lived. Passed down. And when that chain is broken, we don’t just lose knowledge— we lose orientation. In nearly every culture, death is not left unheld. There are structures for sorrow. Containers for emotion. Spaces where grief is allowed to move. Wakes. Vigils. Novenas. Sitting shiva. Ancestor altars. Naming ceremonies. These aren’t just traditions… they are technologies of care. Ritual gives grief somewhere to go. A beginning. A middle. An end— even when the loss itself has none. Without ritual, grief can feel endless. Formless. Disorienting. But with ritual… the body knows what to do. The community knows how to show up. And the heart is not left to carry it alone.
