Nutley Family Service Bureau, Inc.

Nutley Family Service Bureau, Inc. Our mission is to strengthen the emotional and social well-being of individuals and families. Each year, hundreds of clients are served.

All of NFSB’s professional staff have a master’s degree in a human service field and are available for individual, family or group counseling. In addition, the staff is involved in a broad array of community outreach programs ranging from coping with adolescents and dealing with aging parents to helping individuals survive job loss. Staff members are trained to assess drug and alcohol abuse and find appropriate treatment. NFSB is under contract to the Township of Nutley to provide various services. Some clients come in on their own, while others are referred through clergy, police and employee assistance programs. Fees are charged on a sliding scale based on income, but no one is refused service because of inability to pay. The NFSB is run by a board of trustees, composed of 24 Nutley residents who volunteer their time to set policy and raise the necessary funds to ensure the continued existence of the agency. While some funding is derived from the United Way, major funding comes from client fees, corporate and municipal contracts, and through the generous donations of hundreds of individuals. Through the tireless efforts of the NFSB trustees, the Women’s Auxiliary, and other volunteers, we raise funds by holding events such as the annual charity ball, and through the operation of The Thrift Shop, and important on going source of funds for the NFSB.

The World Day of Social Justice is observed annually on February 20th to promote fairness and human rights and to tackle global issues such as poverty, exclusion, unemployment, and gender inequality, with a focus on equitable access to resources and opportunities for all.

It encourages actions to build inclusive societies by addressing systemic barriers and promoting social protection, fair work, and economic inclusion, emphasizing that peace and development rely on justice, solidarity, and equality.

From sorting produce to leading the Board 💚

Mike Evangelista’s journey with NFSB started with a simple volunteer call to help organize a large food donation. That one afternoon turned into years of service — and today, he serves as President of the NFSB Board of Trustees.

Mike has been a dedicated Food Pantry volunteer, committee member, and advocate for expanding awareness and financial sustainability for our programs.

He believes in small, meaningful connections that show people they are seen and cared for — whether that means helping organize governance policies or learning a few translated phrases to make a client feel welcome.

We’re proud to have Mike’s leadership guiding NFSB into its next chapter.

Love, Stress & Your Nervous System

❤️ February reminder:
Your nervous system plays a huge role in how you show up in relationships.

When you’re stressed or overwhelmed, your brain shifts into survival mode - which can look like:
• Irritability
• Shutting down
• Overreacting
• Feeling disconnected

Mental health counseling helps calm the nervous system so you can respond - not just react.

Nutley Family Service Bureau has immediate availability for counseling appointments.

💡 Did you know? Studies show that combining therapy with psychiatric medication can improve treatment outcomes for anxiety, depression, and other mental health conditions.

Taking medication isn’t weakness — it’s a tool to help your brain work with you, not against you.
