Every morning, I start my day with a 5-minute routine (keeping it extra manageable).
It involves deep breathing, and a few simple polyvagal movements to relax and fortify my nervous system, and a couple meditations on certain questions, the answers to which stay with me throughout the day.
The questions are:
💫What is my word or phrase for today?
💫What do I need to know today?
This morning, my phrase for the day was “Start with noticing one beautiful thing, and then notice one more beautiful thing, and one more beautiful thing, and…”
I saw it as a sort of mandala, starting at the center and blossoming outward.
This week, my planner is pretty full. I have a lot to focus on and set a goal to be productive. But today I ended up taking my dog on a 1.5-hour walk, visiting all his favorite spots, following our joy, and slowing down to notice beauty in the patterns of trees.
I usually decide on one route for his walk and limit it to a certain timeframe. But today, we took all the routes.
I walked slowly, feeling my heel and toes intentionally meet the ground with each step, and then ran alongside my pup. I noticed the beauty of the grooves on trees, and the branches against the sky.
We walked on many different trails made of grass, dirt, pavement, and stone. One beautiful thing turned into many, which turned into many more.
I deeply felt that it was the most productive thing I’ve done in a long time. Because it made space in my heart. And this space is where new ideas, inspiration, and energy find room to live.
Practical needs are important, and so are heart needs.
What’s something your heart needs? Can you make just a small amount of time for it?
