This National Nutrition Month, our Registered Dietitian Nutritionists are sharing simple, realistic tips to help you build healthy habits that last.

One key tip: focus on adding more whole foods to your plate. Erika C. Alvarez Avalos, RDN, shares:

"Prioritize whole foods over highly processed options. Whole foods — meaning foods in their natural state — are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber that can help regulate digestion, boost energy levels, maintain a healthy weight, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as high cholesterol, hypertension, and diabetes. These foods include fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes/beans, nuts, seeds, eggs, and lean proteins like fish and poultry."

This National Nutrition Month, our Registered Dietitian Nutritionists are sharing simple, realistic tips to help you build healthy habits that last.

Healthy eating doesn’t have to mean bland or deprived. Elizabeth Staum, RDN, shares:

“It’s not bad to use ‘unhealthy’ ingredients like sugar, butter, or salt. Sometimes a touch of bacon fat can make greens taste delicious. A square or two of your favorite chocolates at the end of the day may be the touch of sweetness you need to feel satisfied. A little of the foods or flavors you most enjoy can help you stay satisfied with a healthy way of eating.”

Yesterday, the Montefiore Nyack Hospital team celebrated Kathy Lunney, MS, RN, Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, on her retirement. Kathy joined Montefiore Nyack in 2015 in an interim role that evolved into a transformative tenure—guiding the hospital through the COVID-19 pandemic, investing in workforce development, and helping the organization earn multiple honors. Kathy’s philosophy was her ability to connect with and build meaningful relationships across the Montefiore Nyack community and beyond, including patients, staff, board members, and community partners. We will miss her dearly and wish her all the best in her well-deserved retirement.
