The Seed Oil Debate
Here's the honest truth: This is one of the most contested topics in nutrition science right now, and legitimate researchers disagree.
The Case Against Seed Oils: Canola, soybean, sunflower oils are high in omega-6 and low in omega-3. When heated, they oxidize and create harmful compounds. There's a plausible biological mechanism for harm.
The Case For Seed Oils: Large population studies don't clearly show seed oils cause disease. It's hard to separate seed oils from other processed foods. Some research suggests they're fine.
Here's what we KNOW for sure:
-Mediterranean diets with olive oil reduce heart disease by 30% (PREDIMED study)
-Oxidized lipids are harmful (established chemistry)
-Seed oils are high in omega-6, which is pro-inflammatory in excess -Real oils have thousands of years of safety data
What we DON'T know:
Whether seed oils themselves cause disease or if it's the overall diet Whether the oxidation from normal cooking is clinically significant Whether switching oils alone would dramatically improve health
My recommendation as a Holistic nutritionist:
When I have to choose between an oil used for 5,000 years (olive) and one created 100 years ago in a factory (canola), I choose the one with the longer track record.
Real oils have proven benefits. Seed oils have mixed evidence. Why not choose the option with clear advantages?
This isn't about fear. It's about optimization.
Start with real oils. Your cells will thank you.
