Honoring Cheyney University of Pennsylvania

The Theme:Philly Soul – The Sound of Independence

Prepare for a sonic journey through the greatest hits and hardest rhythms that only a decade of Legacy Week could deliver! We are bridging the gaps from timeless grooves to modern classics from the legends who paved the way. We want to see you on the floor for: Jill Scott: Neosoul magic for the soul. The Roots: Legendary live instrumentation. Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince: The absolute required summer time energy! Eve: The classic Philly grit and flow. We’re also dropping the needle on timeless Philly Soul Classics from the O'Jays, Harold Melvin, and Teddy Pendergrass, + anthems from Schooly D, Cassidy, and Meek Mill. This is more than a party; it’s a 10-year milestone and a cultural revolution. From the innovators to the dreamers, this is the frequency that defines us. Unapologetic. Pure, unadulterated Black joy. The Official Closing Celebration of HBCUs Legacy Week on the Vineyard

Join us as we wrap up an unforgettable week of culture, connection, and legacy—Vineyard style! Expect vibrant energy, beautiful people, and a classic summer day party atmosphere right in the heart of Oak Bluffs. We’re closing out HBCUs Legacy Week on the Vineyard in true Vineyard fashion — style, culture, connection, and celebration. 🍾🌊

This isn’t just a party; it’s a tribute to the magic we create when we’re just being ourselves.

They try to copy the sauce, but they can’t duplicate the soul. Join us for the 'I Love Us' party as we celebrate the unique brilliance of Black culture.

Come dressed in your best Seersuckers and Sundresses fit and get ready to vibe to the sounds that define us. We’re doing it for the culture, because nobody does it like we do."

From the way we dance to the way we talk, this is a space for the innovators, the dreamers, and the trendsetters.

No explanations needed—just pure, unadulterated Black joy. Because honestly? I love us.

A celebration of the nuance, the rhythm, and the soul that only we can provide. We’re honoring the blueprints we’ve drawn and the culture we carry.

It’s a 'For Us, By Us' kind of night.

- The Blueprint: Acknowledging that we start the trends.

- Unapologetic: No need to code-switch or tone it down.

- The Frequency: That specific "vibe" or "energy" that is easy to feel but hard to define.

- Legacy: A nod to how this creativity is passed down.

Think summer elegance, legacy vibes, and an unforgettable day with HBCU alumni, friends, and family coming together at one of Oak Bluffs’ most iconic spots.

👔👗 DRESS CODE: SEERSUCKER & SUNDRESSES

Pack accordingly.
This is a Vineyard-classic, HBCU-inspired affair.

Preserving the Yard: A Virtual Tour of HBCU Art Collections that Archive our History & Culture.

Join us at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2026, at the Oak Bluffs Public Library for a powerful virtual tour guided by Art Consultant Valerie A. Cooper, National Director of The HBCU Digital Art Project (H-DAP).

H-DAP is a groundbreaking, technology-based art history initiative conceived by Morgan State University graduate Valerie A. Cooper. It is supported by the Smithsonian American Art Museum and is designed to:

• Provide digital access to select works from HBCU permanent fine art collections nationwide,

• Correct the omission of Black artists from the American art canon by highlighting rich artworks stewarded by HBCUs since the 1800s, and

• Create opportunities for African Diaspora artists, including those who identify as African, African American, Caribbean, Latinx, and American Indian.

This 2:00–3:30 p.m. session follows the 2nd Annual STATE of the HBCUnion ADDRESS during Legacy Week on the Vineyard. Refreshments will be served.

Culture as Currency: Quantifying Corporate America’s Debt to HBCUs

FRI. JULY 31st, 11a, OB Library

Hip-hop has generated trillions in cultural influence and corporate profit—yet the institutions that shaped, educated, and empowered much of its leadership and creative foundation have rarely shared equitably in that return. Culture as Currency explores the undeniable economic value of Black culture and asks the critical question: Who truly profits—and who is still owed?

This dynamic panel brings together culture shapers, business leaders, creatives, and HBCU advocates to examine how HBCUs have fueled talent pipelines across music, fashion, media, sports, and corporate America—while often being excluded from the wealth created by their alumni and cultural impact. From brand partnerships and licensing to philanthropy, endowments, and reparative investment models, the conversation will challenge traditional narratives and offer bold, actionable frameworks for accountability.
PANELISTS:

Bryna Jean-Marie |Howard Alumnae, Chief Communications & Storytelling Officer, The Hip Hop Museum

Jazz Young | Howard Alumnae, "The Hip Hop Professor" & Director of the Warner Music/Blavatnik Center for Music Business

This is more than a conversation—it’s a call to redefine value, ownership, and legacy.

Museum of African American History

https://www.maah.org › nantucket-location

The African Meeting House is the only public building constructed and occupied by African Americans in the 19th century still standing on Nantucket. The small post-and-beam building, a National Historic Landmark, is the island’s most vivid reminder of a thriving 19th-century Black community.

The Museum presents cultural programs and interpretive exhibits on the history of African Americans on Nantucket, and makes the African Meeting House available for ceremonies and special events.
