This morning, West Virginia looked like winter.

Snow falling quietly…
the herd moving through the cold…
everything still, gray, and heavy.

By this afternoon, the sun came out.
The snow melted.
And the daffodils were standing there waiting… bright and yellow.

The weather today felt a lot like emotions.

Sometimes we wake up in a storm.
Our thoughts feel heavy.
Our body feels cold and tired.
It can seem like that moment will last forever.

But emotions move just like the weather.

Snow turns to sunshine.
Cold ground gives way to new growth.
And sometimes the very same day that starts in winter ends in spring.

Healing works the same way.

You don’t have to force the sun to come out.
You just have to stay long enough to see the shift.

At A SET CHANCE, we hold space for both the storms and the sunshine.

šŸŽ‰ Historic day for social work in West Virginia!

The Social Work Licensure Compact (SB 703) has officially passed the West Virginia House of Delegates and now heads to the Governor’s desk for signature.

NASW West Virginia was proud to lead the effort to introduce and advance this legislation throughout the session. The Compact will strengthen the social work workforce, support professional mobility, and expand access to services for communities across our state, especially in rural areas.

Thank you to bill sponsor Senator Woodrum, Delegate Leavitt, the members of the West Virginia Senate and House of Delegates, and the many social workers and partners who helped move this important legislation forward. We look forward to the next step as the bill heads to the Governor.

Healing doesn’t always happen in an office chair.

Sometimes it happens in the quiet moments…
in the rhythm of breath…
in the presence of a horse that reflects exactly what our nervous system is doing.

Horses don’t respond to words.
They respond to energy, regulation, and authenticity.

That’s why equine-assisted therapy can be so powerful for trauma work.

When a person begins to regulate their body, the horse notices.
When anxiety rises, the horse notices that too.

In those moments, healing isn’t just talked about —
it’s experienced.

This is the work we do at A SET CHANCE.

SECOND CHANCE SUNDAY

Have you ever noticed how your child can go from calm to explosive in seconds? Dan Siegel’s Upstairs / Downstairs Brain is a simple way to understand why.

The 'downstairs brain' is in charge of big emotions, survival instincts and staying safe. It reacts quickly – think fight, flight, freeze.

The 'upstairs brain' is where problem-solving, empathy, and reasoning live. It helps children make good choices, manage feelings, and connect with others.

But here’s the catch: children’s upstairs brains are still under construction. That means when emotions overwhelm, their downstairs brain often takes over.

This isn’t 'bad behaviour' – it’s biology. When we see it this way, we can respond with compassion, co-regulation, and strategies that help a young person move from downstairs to upstairs.
Resources to support educating a child around this model are available in our Resource Store.
EMOTIONS and MY BRAIN
This extensive resource pack based on Dan Siegel’s Upstairs and Downstairs Brain

Many people think regulation starts in the mind.

But often… it starts in the body.

One of the ways our nervous system organizes itself is through something called proprioception — the body’s ability to sense movement, pressure, and position through our muscles and joints.

This type of input can be incredibly regulating for the nervous system.

Activities like:
• pushing
• pulling
• lifting
• climbing
• resistance-based movement

can help the brain and body reconnect and find balance.

This is one of the reasons movement and interaction with horses can be so powerful in therapeutic work.

Leading a horse.
Brushing them.
Carrying equipment.
Feeling their rhythm as they move.

These experiences provide natural proprioceptive input that helps the nervous system settle, organize, and regulate.

For individuals who have experienced trauma, the body often holds what words cannot explain.

Sometimes healing doesn’t begin with talking.

Sometimes it begins with movement, connection, and feeling safe in your own body again.

Your body is talking. Most people just haven’t learned how to listen.

That headache that keeps coming back.
The tight shoulders that never seem to relax.
The stomach that’s always in knots.
The exhaustion you can’t explain.

Sometimes the body is carrying what the nervous system hasn’t had a chance to release.

Stress.
Fear.
Old trauma.
Constant survival mode.

When the nervous system stays on high alert long enough, the body starts holding the story.

This isn’t weakness.
This isn’t ā€œjust stress.ā€
And it’s definitely not all in your head.

Your mind and body were designed to work together.

And healing often begins when the body finally experiences safety again.

This is one of the reasons I believe so strongly in approaches that involve regulation, connection, and presence—including the powerful work that can happen alongside horses.

Horses don’t respond to our words.
They respond to our nervous system.

And sometimes that connection is where healing quietly begins.

One of the biggest myths about therapy is that people only come when something is ā€œwrong.ā€

In reality, many people come because they want:
• clarity
• healing from past experiences
• healthier coping skills
• personal growth

Choosing to work on yourself is not weakness.
It’s courage.

At A SET CHANCE, supporting that journey is what we’re here for. šŸ’›šŸŽšŸ’™
