Our team at Healthy Tooth Dental has been carefully monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic as it relates to providing care for our patients. We have followed daily and up to date recommendations provided by the Centers for Disease Control, American Dental Association, Illinois State Dental Society and our Illinois Department of Public Health. Our efforts were followed and modified as guidance was established with additional safety measures above and beyond our already followed comprehensive universal standards and infection control. At this point, our Illinois State Dental Society has asked that we treat only patients *requiring emergency dental procedures* and postpone elective dental treatment for a period of two weeks beginning Tuesday, March 17 through Tuesday, March 31. This is for the best of our patients, staff, and community at large.

Our office will remain open for *emergency patients* with the following precautions:

• Each patient will be pre-screened by phone prior to the visit by asking about recent travel history and current health. Specific COVID-19 symptoms are fever, coughing and shortness of breath. If you report that you have any of these symptoms, you will be referred to your primary care physician who will guide you on how to proceed.

• If you must be seen, we ask that when you arrive – you remain in your car instead of coming into the waiting room. We will notify you by cell phone when your treatment room is ready.

• You will have your temperature taken immediately upon arrival.

• You will be asked to wash your hands in the operatory and rinse with a hydrogen peroxide solution.

In the upcoming days, our office will be calling all patients that have scheduled their check up and cleaning appointments to cancel these appointments. If you are in a temporary appliance, i.e. temporary crown or bridge, we will also call you to provide guidance on how to complete your definitive treatment.

We value our patients and want you to know that we are still available to you virtually. Our ultimate goal is to “flatten the curve” by slowing and halting the transmission. This will also help medical professionals at the emergency rooms have access to as many personal protective equipment (PPE) that they can have.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.

In health,
Dr. Esther Lopez and your team at Healthy Tooth Dental

DID YOU KNOW?: The need for dental x-rays depends on each patient’s individual dental health needs. Our dentists and dental hygienists will recommend necessary x-rays based upon the review of your medical and dental history, a dental exam, signs and symptoms, your age, and risk of disease. Many patients ask, "why do I need x-rays?" Dental x-rays may reveal abscesses or cysts, bone loss, cancerous and non-cancerous tumors, decay between the teeth, developmental abnormalities, poor tooth and root positions, problems inside a tooth or below the gum line. X-rays are an essential component in achieving and maintaining good oral health. At Healthy Tooth Dental we go one step further. We utilize a digital x-ray system. Digital radiography (digital x-ray) is the latest technology used to take dental x-rays. This technique uses an electronic sensor (instead of x-ray film) that captures and stores the digital image on a computer. This image can be instantly viewed and enlarged helping the dentist and dental hygienist detect problems easier. Digital x-rays reduce radiation 80-90% compared to the already low exposure of traditional dental x-rays. DID YOU KNOW: February is National Children's Dental Health Month

Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. This year's NCDHM campaign features the slogan "Join the Super Smile Team!". This eye catching poster features the McGrinn Twins, Flossy and Buck, along with their best friends and next-door neighbors Den and Gen Smiley and K-9 the Dog, fighting for good oral health and a super smile. The preteen/teen super heroes are smiling because they fought for great oral health and a super winning smile.

Attitudes and habits established at an early age are critical in maintaining good oral health throughout life. Talk to your children! Make brushing and flossing fun!

Stay tuned for our upcoming post. In the spirit of National Children's Dental Health Month we will be raffling off a super cool futuristic cavity fighting machine!

It's important to start children early in the right direction to good dental hygiene. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child should see a dentist when the first tooth comes in, usually between 6 and 12 months of age. You can make the first visit to the dentist enjoyable and positive.

It is best to refrain from using words around your child that might cause unnecessary fear, such as needle, pull, drill or hurt. We make a practice of using words that convey the same message, but are pleasant and non-frightening to a child.

Brushing techniques, flossing, healthy snacks and fluoride recommendations are just some of the topics discussed during your child's initial cleaning and exam appointment.

To schedule an appointment for your little one you can reach us at (708)386-3200.
