Mary Munson Runge was elected president of the American Pharmacists Association — the first woman and the first African American - in 1979.

She graduated Xavier University of Louisiana College in 1948 and began her career as a hospital pharmacist, before becoming a community pharmacist, helping lower income people get their medications.

As APA president, Runge advocated for the profession, helping to attract more women and minorities. She served on a variety of federal committees over the next two decades and was inducted into the California Pharmacists Association’s Hall of Fame in 1997.

She died in 2014 and the APA established a scholarship in her name.
