March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month 💚—a time to recognize the contributions, talents, and achievements of people with developmental disabilities while promoting inclusion and understanding in our communities.

The 2026 theme, “We’re Here. Then, Now, Always,” highlights the enduring presence, leadership, and impact of people with developmental disabilities throughout history and today. It reminds us that people with disabilities have always been an important part of our communities—and that continued advocacy and inclusion are essential for the future.

At Emory Valley Center, we are proud to support individuals and families by promoting independence, opportunity, and community connection. This month is an opportunity to celebrate the progress that has been made while continuing to advocate for a more inclusive world where everyone can thrive.

🎥 March Advocacy Spotlight: Community Inclusion

This month, Mel Stanley shares an important message about the power of community inclusion in the latest March Advocacy video.

Community inclusion means ensuring that people of all abilities have the opportunity to live, work, and participate fully in their communities. From building meaningful relationships to accessing local activities and opportunities, inclusion helps create stronger, more connected communities for everyone.

In the video, Mel highlights why inclusion matters and how small actions can make a big difference—whether it’s welcoming someone new, creating accessible opportunities, or simply recognizing the value every person brings to our community.

At Emory Valley Center, we believe everyone deserves to feel like they belong. Thank you, Mel, for using your voice to advocate for a more inclusive community! 💚

🎬 Be sure to watch Mel’s March Advocacy video and help spread the message of inclusion!

🌟 Investing in Person-Centered Support!

Members of the Emory Valley Center team recently completed a 4-day Personal Outcome Measures (POM) workshop facilitated by DDA and led by CQL | The Council on Quality and Leadership.

This intensive training focuses on strengthening person-centered practices and improving quality of life for people with disabilities. Through the workshop, participants learned how to use the 21-indicator Personal Outcome Measures tool to better understand what truly matters to the people we support.
The training included learning how to:
✔️ Conduct meaningful interviews with individuals receiving services
✔️ Analyze information to guide decision-making
✔️ Develop and implement supports that align with each person’s goals and preferences

At Emory Valley Center, we are committed to continuous learning and growth so we can provide the highest quality support. Opportunities like this help ensure that the individuals we serve are empowered to live the lives they choose in their communities.

👏 Thank you to our dedicated staff and partners who continue to champion person-centered services!

🍎 March is Senior Nutrition Month! 🥗

March is recognized as Senior Nutrition Month, a time to highlight the importance of healthy eating and good nutrition for older adults. Proper nutrition plays a vital role in supporting overall health, maintaining energy, and helping seniors stay active and independent.

At Emory Valley Center, we understand how important access to nutritious meals and education about healthy eating can be for the people we support. Balanced meals not only fuel the body but also bring people together, creating opportunities for connection, community, and wellness.

This month, we celebrate the caregivers, staff, families, and community partners who help ensure seniors have access to nutritious foods and the support they need to live healthy, fulfilling lives.

💚 Join us in recognizing Senior Nutrition Month by checking in on the seniors in your life, sharing a healthy meal, or learning more about ways to support nutrition and wellness in our community.

🎉 We Have Another MAPs Graduate!

🌟 Congratulations, Scott! 🎓

Emory Valley Center is proud to celebrate another MAPs graduate, Scott!

Over the past three years, Scott has embraced new opportunities, built connections, and continued to grow in inspiring ways. During his time in the program, he became involved with Emory Valley Center’s Board and IT Committee, connected with the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce, and even presented at a conference in Denver. His willingness to step outside his comfort zone and try new experiences has been remarkable.

Emory Valley Center is grateful to have been part of Scott’s journey and looks forward to seeing all the amazing things he will accomplish in the future.

A special thank you to the EVC team and to Dianna for her dedication to the MAPs program and the support she provides in helping people reach their full potential. 💚

Our Early Intervention team was proud to host a Parent Informational Meeting focused on one of the most important (and sometimes challenging!) topics for families — sleep.

We were thrilled to welcome Katie Wood and Amanda Spiess from Vanderbilt TRIAD, who shared valuable information and practical strategies during our session on Successful Sleep Strategies. They provided helpful insight into common sleep difficulties and offered practical tools families can begin using right away.

We were excited to have 7 families join us in person and 20 join online for this parent meeting! It’s wonderful to see so many families taking advantage of opportunities to learn, connect, and support one another.

Thank you to Katie and Amanda for sharing your expertise, and to all the parents who participated in this informative and encouraging session. We love creating opportunities that empower and support the families we serve!
