Many families worry constantly about the heart health of their loved ones — the shortness of breath, the risk of another cardiac episode and the daily uncertainty that comes with these conditions.

When hospice care begins, a care team can gently explain how specialized Heart Failure Programs, often developed in collaboration with leading organizations like the American Heart Association, are designed for these moments.

Through routine visits, nurses trained in advanced cardiac care monitor symptoms, manage changes and help keep patients comfortable at home.

For families, this reassurance means everything — knowing the care plan includes not only medical expertise but also compassion and dignity every step of the way.

Giving back to our communities is essential. In an inspiring act of kindness, St. Croix Hospice Aides Mollie Conway and Emmy Clabaugh delivered an incredible 436 pounds of food to the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank in Mason City, Iowa. This donation was the result of a branch-wide team-building contest, where everyone worked together collecting food to help support families in our community who are facing hardship.

We believe in lifting up our neighbors and coming together to make a meaningful difference. Through teamwork, compassion and a shared commitment to service, our branch united for a cause that truly matters. We are grateful for the opportunity to give back, and we thank everyone who contributed their time and heart to this effort. Every donation brings hope and joy.

The holiday season is an important time of year.

In addition to exchanging gifts and enjoying meals together, the time spent with others is invaluable.

When communication proves challenging and emotions are difficult to navigate, shared presence becomes particularly meaningful.

As various holidays approach, remember to practice gratitude and value each moment.

We understand any end-of-life experience is hard.

One way we can better serve more families, caregivers, patients and additional admissions is to understand who we serve.

Meet Champ, our joyful Golden Retriever volunteer who brings bright moments to St. Croix Hospice.

Inspired by how much happiness Champ shares with those around him, his family helped him earn his Canine Good Citizen certification through the American Kennel Club.

Champ’s favorite part of volunteering is meeting new friends and greeting everyone with his cheerful energy.

He chose hospice work to offer comfort and companionship when it matters most.

At just six years old, Champ continues to make a meaningful impact, not only in the lives of those he visits but in his own and his handler’s life too. Volunteering has taught them both to slow down and appreciate each moment. You can follow Champ's heartwarming journey on Instagram at .

At St. Croix Hospice, we bring meaning to all patients’ lives, whether through religious, spiritual, physical, emotional or social support — or even through immense love for pets.

Grief can feel confusing and overwhelming — especially in the quiet moments after loss.

Many families find comfort using tools like the emotion wheel to name what they’re feeling.

When emotions feel heavy and unclear, giving them a name can help soften their hold.

Simple grounding techniques, like box breathing, can also help calm the body when the heart feels unsteady.

To perform box breathing, inhale, hold, exhale and hold your breath for equal counts, typically for four seconds each.

There’s no timeline for grief.

And through every stage, St. Croix Hospice is here when you need us.

Allowing silence is an essential part of the grieving process.

It’s natural for those grieving to feel uneasy with the quiet or emptiness that follows loss.

While it’s important to acknowledge silence and emptiness, finding ways to bring meaning into those spaces can help.

This isn’t about replacing what was lost — it’s about honoring what once was and gently moving toward acceptance.

Talking about and facing end-of-life situations is never an easy topic.

However, we often learn that it's necessary to discuss the important topics. Even if it's hard to.

End of life can teach us something despite being heavy and sad.

End of life forces us to look at what's most precious and continues to remind us to make each moment count.

Perhaps the way we put on our socks or brush our teeth, the way we cook meals and prepare the dinner table, all serve as memories and meaning to who we are and what we value.

Never forget that it's great to remember these identity values.
