To all the parents who had to take care of their parents…

Give yourself more credit. Allow yourself to feel the space and moment you're in.

It's no easy feat to take care of children and an elder.

To do both requires extreme willpower and strength.

As you balance your career, ambitions, personal identity and space, give yourself grace.

Hospice volunteers play a meaningful role in supporting patients and families.

You don’t need medical experience — just compassion and a willingness to be there for someone who needs comfort.

Volunteers help by offering companionship through conversation or quiet presence, providing emotional support to families and helping with light tasks.

If you've ever wanted to make a real difference in your community, this is a beautiful way to do it.

St. Croix Hospice offers grief and bereavement support to anyone in the community — even if you’ve never received our services.

Our support groups give families a space to connect, share their experiences and feel understood. And for those who prefer to reflect quietly, that’s okay too. Everyone grieves in their own way.

No matter how you process loss, we’re here to walk with you when you need us most.

These groups are one of the many ways we give back to the communities we serve.

On Jan. 31, St. Croix Hospice was honored to help fulfill a final wish for Theresa Grosvenor, a resident at Estherville Community Care Center in Iowa, so she could witness her daughter Hannah get married to her partner Tyler.

With support from her son Calvin, Estherville Community Care Center staff and additional community partners, the couple traveled from Florida for an intimate ceremony officiated by Pastor Chris St. Clair, with photography by Liz from Dekker Photography and flowers from Tricia’s Flowers.

Theresa was surrounded by loved ones as she watched the ceremony, holding an orange bouquet and sharing in a moment that brought peace and lasting memories for her family.

Theresa passed away shortly after the wedding, but her story reflects why we do what we do at St. Croix Hospice — being present for patients and families when they need us most and creating meaningful moments together.

"This allowed her to find peace and finally be okay moving on and going home to grandma with open arms," said Hannah.

Why am I feeling angry at my loved one?

For some caregivers, they might unexpectedly experience anger without understanding the cause.

This anger can stem from various reasons such as emotional burnout, past resentment or lack of support from other loved ones.

This anger can cause us to spiral into further confusion, resulting in a cycle of negative turmoil. It’s important to remind ourselves that our anger is normal. Take time to question why this emotion may have risen and its cause.

Then, remember to stay kind to yourselves and your loved ones. Allow the anger to pass. Recover and rejuvenate before stepping back into the deepest form of love we can give: taking care of another.

Hospice nurses provide care wherever a patient calls home — whether that's a private residence, assisted living or nursing facility.

Each nurse at St. Croix Hospice spends meaningful time with their patients to understand their needs and manage their care.

Beyond administering treatment, nurses ensure families feel informed and supported, offering the reassurance and dignity that defines exceptional hospice care.

For medical tasks, nurses may assess patients for comfort, manage symptoms and coordinate care throughout the end-of-life journey. This can include wound and catheter care, consulting with physicians to obtain new medications orders, and ensuring all necessary medical supplies and equipment are in place.

Each day is an opportunity for nurses at St. Croix Hospice to bring comfort, dignity and quality of life to patients and their families. No two days are alike, and our nurses make the difference.

We’re here to help you through life’s most challenging moments, offering care and compassion as you journey forward.

Just as a river finds its way, we’re honored to guide you and your loved ones with support every step of the way.

One of the most complicated feelings after losing a loved one is the sense of relief that can follow their passing — especially if the journey was long or difficult.

This relief can bring up guilt, whether it’s tied to past experiences, challenging moments or simply the end of a stressful chapter.

It’s important to remember that these feelings are normal. Relief doesn’t mean you cared any less or that you did something wrong.

It’s a natural response to witnessing someone you love struggle and to the weight of caregiving finally lifting.

Instead of blaming yourself or others, try to acknowledge these emotions with compassion. Giving yourself permission to feel what you feel is a step toward healing.

Caring for a loved one can be rewarding, but it often comes with real challenges. When stress builds, it’s important to remember that help is available and you don’t have to do it all alone. Finding support, whether through community groups, family or professional care, can make a meaningful difference. Sometimes, just talking with others who understand your experience can lighten the load and offer new ways to cope.

If caregiving feels overwhelming, consider reaching out to other family members to share responsibilities. Open conversations about what kind of help is needed now and in the future can help everyone play to their strengths. Financial support may also be available through government programs or disease-specific organizations, so exploring these options can ease some of the burden.

Professional help, like home care assistance or hospice, can provide both practical and emotional support. These services not only help with daily tasks but also offer guidance and a listening ear when things get tough. Above all, asking for help is a sign of strength — not weakness. Taking care of yourself is one of the best things you can do for those you love.
