HARRISBURG – Rep. Jason Ortitay (R-Washington/Allegheny) today announced that in partnership with Sen. Devlin Robinson (R-Allegheny) he has secured more than $400,000 through the Gaming Economic Development and Tourism Fund (GEDTF) for a major stormwater improvement project in Oakdale Borough.

The GEDTF program provides funding for single-year and multi-year projects that promote development in Allegheny County, including economic, infrastructure and community improvements; job training; public safety; and public interest. The money comes from the tax assessed on slot machines in casinos.

“For years, flooding has devastated families and businesses throughout Oakdale and fixing it has been one of my top priorities,” Ortitay said. “This investment is another meaningful step forward in the borough’s multi-pronged plan to reduce flooding, and I’m proud to continue supporting its efforts to protect the community. I’m hopeful this project will help deliver the long-term solution residents deserve.”

The $400,475 in grant funding will be used for stormwater improvements to upgrade two pollution reduction plan ponds along Cottonwood Drive and Highland Avenue. The work will include pond excavation, piping, storm manholes, inlets, fencing, gates, and replacement of end walls.

The 46th Legislative District includes South Fayette Township and McDonald and Oakdale boroughs in Allegheny County. It also encompasses Cecil, Chartiers, Mt. Pleasant and North Strabane (Districts 6,7,8 and 9) townships and Canonsburg, Houston and McDonald boroughs in Washington County.

As you know, the Oakdale Hose Company has launched a wonderful program to assist with Thanksgiving dinners. Although stated drop offs ended on Friday, they will be accepting them all week, as well as monetary donations to help purchase the fresh ingredients later this week. Please see all the details below!

Thank you to the Oakdale Hose Company

As we come into The Season of Giving, we would like to continue to help give back to our community who literally keeps us afloat. We are doing a Thanksgiving Food Drive beginning Monday October 20 through Friday November 14.

Here is what we need:

Boxes of instant or fresh potatoes, boxed stuffing, canned or fresh sweet potatoes, canned corn or green beans, jars of turkey gravy, jiffy corn bread mix, canned or fresh cranberries, chicken stock canned or box. Gift cards can be donated for the turkeys, and frozen pies. With your donations we will work with other organizations in the community to get the baskets we make to families that may not otherwise be able to have a Thanksgiving dinner.

We will make as many baskets as we can with the donations we receive.

Drop your donations at firehouse Monday-Friday from 8am-4pm (or anytime you see the doors up or a car in our parking lot) or at Our Cars Auto Detailing (directly across the street from the police station where the race cars are parked). Any questions, please call or text Arlene at 412-726-8565.

Want to help us provide Thanksgiving dinners to some local families, but don't want to shop, aren't local to the Oakdale community, can't get out, don't have time? We got you! Make a donation here to our Thanksgiving Dinner Fund and we will do the shopping! Thank you for supporting our mission, your...

Open Letter to the Residents of Oakdale Borough

From the Office of the Mayor and Borough Council

In an effort to maintain complete transparency, we want to share the following information regarding the 2026 Borough Budget.

Dear Residents of Oakdale,

As we prepare to advertise the Borough’s 2026 Budget, we want to take this opportunity to share some important information with you. The proposed budget is balanced, streamlined, and includes significant reductions in spending. However, after ten years of maintaining a steady tax rate, this year’s budget does include a millage increase of 3 mills.

This decision was not made lightly. Over the past decade, the Borough has faced increasing costs while seeing a decline in both millage revenue and earned income tax revenue. Millage remains the primary source of funding for municipalities, and this adjustment is necessary to ensure that Oakdale Borough remains financially stable and able to provide the services our residents expect and deserve.

A major factor in this increase is our continued and growing support for public safety. Since 2020, police wages alone have increased from $140,500 to $233,600, and we have also added $38,000 annually for fire department wages, in addition to the $30,000 yearly contribution toward fire apparatus and equipment. These increases alone over the past five years are more than the equivalent of two mills. Our current millage rate no longer covers these essential costs—let alone the other expenses required to operate the Borough. This increase will help us “right the ship” and ensure that our police and fire departments remain properly staffed, trained, and equipped to serve you.

To put this in perspective according to our tax collector, one mill in a community our size generates only between $60,000 to $65,000. Even with this increase, Oakdale Borough will remain in the average range of municipalities similar to ours in size and service level.

We understand that any increase affects our residents, and we share in that responsibility as members of this community. That’s why, alongside this adjustment, we have worked diligently to cut and minimize spending wherever possible. In addition, although our water supplier has announced an increase for 2026, the Borough has taken steps to absorb that cost for this year so that residents will not see a rise in water rates. Unfortunately, sewage and trash services are pass-through costs and cannot be offset by the Borough.

We are also launching a comprehensive study in collaboration with our water supplier to explore further ways to contain costs and improve efficiency in the future.

Please know that this Mayor and Council are fully committed to responsible financial management, transparency, and the well-being of our community. The millage increase is a necessary step toward a positive and sustainable future for Oakdale Borough—one that ensures we can continue to provide essential services, maintain public safety, and invest in the community we are all proud to call home.

Thank you for your understanding, trust, and continued support.

Sincerely,

The Mayor and Borough Council of Oakdale Borough

A Message From Chief Lauria and the Oakdale Police Department:

Every year the police focus on the parents checking the items your children get during the trick or treat portion of Halloween.

This year in a town close to the city a small woven bag was found in a child's snack bag. The parents were inspecting the items and when they got to the bag they opened to find a white powder in it. The police were called and the powder tested positive for co***ne.

I know it's hard to grasp that someone would want to hurt a child, but we must also face the reality that there are evil people in the world.

Our request is that you tell your child (children) to be very safe and to not eat their candy until you have looked at it and are sure it is safe to eat. If candy wrappers are torn or open, throw it out.

Key safety tips include making costumes highly visible and flame-resistant, supervising children closely while trick or treating in well-lit and familiar areas, and thoroughly inspecting all candy before it's eaten.

Drivers should be extra cautious, especially during peak trick or treating hours, and homeowners can enhance safety by clearing yards of hazards and using only battery-operated candles for decorations.

For Trick or Treaters:

Be visible: Wear bright or light-colored costumes and add reflective tape. Carry glow sticks or flashlights for better visibility.

Ensure costumes are safe: Choose costumes that are the right size to avoid tripping. Avoid long, trailing fabric, and opt for face paint over a mask to ensure clear vision.

Stay with a group: Children should always trick or treat in groups, and young children should be accompanied by an adult.

Stick to safe routes: Only visit well-lit houses in familiar neighborhoods. Never go inside a stranger's home.

Walk safely: Use sidewalks and designated crosswalks. Look both ways before crossing the street and never cross between parked cars.

For Drivers:

Slow down: Pay extra attention to children, who may be unpredictable, and drive at a reduced speed.

Be alert: Turn on headlights early and avoid using your phone while driving.

Use caution at intersections: Be extra careful when drivers and pedestrians are using crosswalks.

For Homeowners:

Light up your home: Turn on your exterior lights to welcome trick or treaters.

Clear hazards: Remove any obstacles from your yard, such as garden hoses, tools, or decorations that could cause someone to trip.

Use battery-operated candles or glow sticks instead of real flames in jack-o'-lanterns.

Keep pets indoors, away from the front door, to prevent them from running away.

For Everyone:

Inspect all treats: Before eating, check all candy. Discard any unwrapped, suspicious, or homemade treats.

Consider carrying emergency information: Put emergency contact information on a costume or the child's wrist.

Drive safely: Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If driving children, ensure everyone is properly buckled up before you start.

The police and fire departments will be on the roads throughout the 6PM-9PM Trick or Treat so if you need anything either flag us down or call 911 and we'll be there within minutes.

Have a safe and Happy Halloween.

We are happy to report “Ice Cream with the Mayor” 2.0. He visited with Rita Mae and John Petricko last month, who moved into their home in 1956. They raised 4 kids there and never left! They had no complaints, and love their neighborhood and the neighbors, and feel safe here.

Thanks to The Ice Creamery and The First Lady for helping out!

Mayor Trusnovic completed his first “Ice Cream with the Mayor” with Joan Garrett last week. She was a great candidate as the visit fell on her 95th birthday.(which she shares with Mayor Trusnovic)! Her only complaint was the sewage fee. She loves living here (since 1943) and the people. Her family has been very involved in the community over the years.

Thanks to The Ice Creamery for the ice cream, and providing Micaella, who went with him and took the picture!
