Bottle feeding young babies can be exhausting as they need to be fed every couple of hours. Tired parents frequently resort to propping bottles either by rolling towels or using a commercially available bottle propper. However, these are strongly discouraged. The reasons being:

High risk of choking: Young babies that are not still able to hold the bottle may choke when milk pools in their mouth
Risk of ear infections: Pooled milk can enter the ear tubes and cause more problems such as ear infections
Overfeeding
Risk of tooth decay
Lost bonding time

Until your infant is developmentally able to hold the bottle which varies from baby to baby, always hold them at an angle while bottle feeding.

It’s been a busy week here at Monarch Pediatrics! So much flu and viral fever going around in schools. If you haven’t had your flu shot yet, it’s not too late. Hope everyone has a safe and healthy holiday season.

Here are some tips to help parents care for kids with cold and flu symptoms:

1. Fever reducer for temperatures over 100.4F or 38C and uncomfortable
2. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Offer pedialyte or other electrolyte solution. For kids refusing pedialyte, offer popsicles/apple juice/ home-made lemonade or soups
3. Keep nostrils clear either by blowing or saline rinse
4. Honey or honey-cinnamon-lemon tea for cough/sore throat
5. Humidifier in bedroom

Kids generally take about 5-7 days to recover from viral fevers, sometimes up to 10 days.

Contact your pediatrician if
1. Wheezing or breathing very fast
2. Decreased urination/acting very tired/poor oral intake
3. Symptoms lasting over 10 days
4. Severe vomiting or diarrhea
5. Very tired

Parents — a bulky coat can create extra room in a car seat harness. Thinner layers provide the same warmth, and the harness will still fit snugly. 🧒✔️

Hearing impairment in young children needs immediate detection and intervention because it leads to speech and developmental delay. Congenital CMV causes hearing impairment even without symptoms at birth. All newborns undergo a hearing screen at birth and a hearing assessments are done at well visits. Having a family history of sensorineural hearing loss means close monitoring and screening for symptoms of hearing loss. If you have concerns of hearing loss, bring it up at your next well visit with your pediatrician.

If your child is experiencing symptoms of sore throat, know that it is a common illness around this time of the year. Sore throats are usually viral and for the most part get better with salt water gargles, adequate hydration and rest. Bacterial causes of sore throat such as strep throat tend to cause more severe symptoms that are persistent and many times kids develop a rash (Scarlet fever) If your child's symptoms have been lingering and have been persistent, contact your doctor for a visit.
