If your child is experiencing symptoms of sore throat, know that it is a common illness around this time of the year. Sore throats are usually viral and for the most part get better with salt water gargles, adequate hydration and rest. Bacterial causes of sore throat such as strep throat tend to cause more severe symptoms that are persistent and many times kids develop a rash (Scarlet fever) If your child's symptoms have been lingering and have been persistent, contact your doctor for a visit.

Studies have shown that kids get an average of 6-10 colds per year! Younger the child, higher the number. Not every cold needs to be treated with antibiotics. Unnecessary use of antibiotics have several disadvantages including

Side effects: Rash, diarrhea, stomach upset
Damage to the gut flora
Yeast overgrowth
Antibiotic resistance and superbugs

Home remedies for colds such as honey for cough, popsicles for sore throat, lozenges/cough drops, salt water gargles, humidifiers/steam inhalation work wonders in helping your child's symptoms.

Talk to your pediatrician if home remedies are an option before you ask for antibiotics for your child
