At Kaiser East Bay, this feels especially timely. We’re exploring ways AI might enhance:
✨ How we teach clinical reasoning
✨ How trainees interact with data at the bedside
✨ How we design pathways, simulations, and decision-support tools
✨ How we prepare future hospitalists to work alongside emerging technologies

It’s exciting to see how the field is evolving — and to think about how we can integrate these insights into the way we teach and learn within pediatric hospital medicine.

A weekend to remember at the Kaiser Oakland Women in Medicine Retreat at the beautiful Carmel Valley Ranch 🌸
We shared stories, strategies, and laughter with incredible women across our region—building community that will carry us long beyond the retreat.

From vineyard workouts and pickleball showdowns 💪🏽🎾 to inspiring panels featuring our own Fellowship PD, Miranda Kane and also our pediatric Hospitalist colleague, Heather Caputo. We’re grateful for the opportunity to connect, learn, and grow together. 💫

Today, our residency and fellowship teams came together for an important community outreach event: opioid education at a local high school.

This work is deeply personal—our attending shared the story of her brother, who tragically died of an opioid overdose at just 23 years old. For the past 15 years, she has been bringing this education into schools, and this year our resident and fellow joined the effort, even leading portions of the discussion.

The students were incredibly receptive. With support from the resources at .light, we taught practical, life-saving tools:
💡 Always tell someone if you are experimenting
💡 Use fentanyl test strips
💡 Know where Narcan is and how to use it

We believe this education is critical to saving lives, and we are committed to continuing the conversation. Together, we can fight the opioid epidemic.

We’d love to partner with other residencies and PHM fellowships in this important advocacy work. It will take all of us to spread awareness and protect our communities.

📢 Fellow Spotlight!
We’re so proud of Dr. Lydia Maleknia, whose recently published research is already making a real-world impact! 🧬✨ Her study on Shiga toxin–producing E. coli led to a new clinical recommendation at Kaiser Permanente, guiding outpatient monitoring based on toxin type.

💡 Even more, her work influenced our lab practices—reinstating dual serotype testing to improve clinical decision-making.

Check out her paper: Maleknia L, Samiezade-Yazd Z, Luu X, Cranshaw M, Weintraub MR, Greenhow TL. Predicting Progression of STEC-HUS: Use of Shiga Toxin Subtype and Routine Laboratory Screening. J Pediatric Infect Dis Soc. 2025 Apr 8;14(4):piaf022.

When it comes to choosing where to live when you work at Kaiser Oakland, we are so lucky with our location. Not only does Oakland offer the perfect blend of city vibes, rich diversity, amazing food and green space but its central location in the Bay Area means tons of amazing places to live are just a short commute away. Each week we are highlighting where our physician staff call home.
🏡 This week: San Rafael, where our Hospitalist, Brian Cassidy, lives
❤️ Why he loves it: Central Marin County has multiple small, picturesque towns with cute shopping districts and good restaurants (San Rafael, Larkspur, Greenbrae, Mill Valley, etc). It has a great community and schools. It also has proximity to hiking trails, mountain biking, Mt Tam, and the beaches of west Marin. It’s
definitely a bedroom/family community though; single people might be bored at the lack of nightlife.
🚗 The commute: The commute is through Richmond and over the Richmond-San Rafael bridge. The commute is usually against traffic, thankfully.
Without traffic: 30 min
With traffic: 45-50 min

🏡 This week: Moraga where 3 of our hospitalists live
❤️ Why they love it: It’s semi-rural, a small town, and a family oriented neighborhood with tons of access to the open spaces. It’s also home to St Mary’s college.
🚗 The commute: 20 mins without traffic and 35-40 minutes with traffic
