Deb Lyman, LCSW

Deb Lyman, LCSW Individual Psychotherapy, Couples Therapy, and Clinical Consultation in Oakland and throughout Calif Hi.

I’m Deb Lyman, a psychotherapist in Oakland, who helps individuals and couples find more satisfaction in their relationships and in their lives. People call me when they are at a turning point or a breaking point—when they are ready to get to the root of things so they can live the fullest life possible. I specialize in working with people who may have a lot of success in their lives, but internally are easily overwhelmed by self-doubt. Perhaps this shows up as ambivalence about an intimate relationship, or a general sense of disconnection from oneself and what one truly wants and needs. Other specialities include addressing the impact of growing up with an alcoholic, narcissistic, or mentally ill family member, coming out issues, and working with the q***r community. I also provide clinical supervision and consultation to other therapists interested in relational work and especially enjoy supporting newly licensed therapists as they enter practice. For more information about this aspect of my practice, see www.privatepracticeconsultation.com.

Trauma prevention tip- limit your news intake. I recommend 10 -15 minutes of reading something that is not sensationalized, maybe NPR.org.

It helps to talk.

There’s more to the age-old advice to just “talk it out” than there seems. Here’s some of the evidence that explains why it is so helpful.

A thought for managing nervous system overload while staying informed- try to not read the news online. The barrage of headlines can be overwhelming, even if you don’t read the articles. Watching on tv can also be too much. Remember how traumatizing it was to see images of the towers falling over and over? Same holds here. Try listening to NPR, where you can be told one story at a time, and turn it off when needed. Things are going to be stressful for a long time. Take care of your nervous systems however you can. ❤️

Looking forward to this!
