Native American Health Center’s Red Lightning Woman Power Singing Group, an Indigenous Women’s Singing Collective, was honored at the 2026 Women’s History Month Celebration at San Francisco City Hall, invited by Indigenous Justice and the San Francisco Department on the Status of Women.

In the presence of Mayor Daniel Lurie and community leaders, the group opened the gathering in a good way with land acknowledgement, songs of prayer, strength, and ancestral voice. They were presented with a Certificate of Appreciation for uplifting women, girls, and non-binary relatives.

For over 20 years, Red Lightning Woman Power (previously known as Sweet Lodge Sista's) has created spaces of healing through arts and culture, mentorship, and cultural preservation. Wearing red to honor Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives, they continue to carry song as medicine, uplifting Indigenous voices and strengthening community for future generations.

This week, we're honored to highlight Seven Generations (7G) Scholarship alum, Alani Brown! Alani is a member of the Elem Colony of Pomo Indians and earned her degree in Theatre Arts with a minor in Psychology from Chico State University in 2021.

Currently, Alani is working at NAHC, where she served as an Administrative Assistant for four years before being promoted to Site Operations Manager, supporting daily operations at our 7 Directions location.

Alani shared that the scholarship “had a major impact on my education. I was able to afford books and supplies, and the financial relief for myself and my parents was life-changing. It helped me pursue my passions and gain academic confidence. I felt like I was being seen in a different light, which helped me better see the potential in myself.” We're honored that support from our scholarship has helped so many Native students, like Alani, achieve their goals and work toward their full potential.

Outside of work, Alani stays connected to her community by attending powwows and cultural events. She's been proud to share the scholarship with others, including her brother, who was also a recipient, and is interested in supporting future applicants with writing their personal statements.
