Center for Elders' Independence

Center for Elders' Independence PACE senior healthcare plan serving San Francisco East Bay residents. We keep seniors living at home

Center for Elders' Independence (CEI) is a non-profit health plan that's been serving the San Francisco Bay Area for over 30 years, providing the Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) to seniors age 55 and older who prefer not to move into a nursing home but whose health problems make it impossible for them to stay at home without the help of caregivers. PACE is a nationally recognized model of long-term care that offers a broad range of medical, social, and day health services in home-based and community-based settings. CEI's mission statement is to provide high quality, affordable, integrated health care services to the elderly, which promote autonomy, quality of life, and the ability of individuals to live in their communities. The Fund for Elders' Independence (FEI) is a foundation supporting the work of the Center for Elders' Independence.

CEI PACE isn’t just about medicine, it’s a full circle of support for your health, independence, and well-being.

Through PACE, you work with a dedicated care team made up of 11 different disciplines, including medical providers, therapists, social workers, nutrition specialists, and more.

PACE is often called the gold standard of senior care, and for good reason, because we don’t just treat illness, we encourage overall health.

We’re honored to announce that the Center for Elders’ Independence received the 2025 DEI Award at the National PACE Conference in New York City!

This recognition is meaningful as it celebrates our commitment to advancing principles that are central to who we are as an organization and rooted in our mission charter: to support our community with access to social and medical care, and to advocate for true healthcare equity.

At CEI, we believe health equity begins with representation. Our team reflects the vibrant community we serve, bringing unique cultures, perspectives, life experiences, and deep compassion to the work we do every day. Together, we’re building a future where every voice matters and every person has the opportunity to thrive.

Thank you to our incredible CEI team for making this possible. We’re just getting started, and we invite you to join us on this journey!

PACE Temescal was proud to host the Tee Lab team from UCSF for a Chinese-language presentation on mental health designed specifically for our seniors. Their visit created a welcoming space for Chinese-speaking elders to learn, ask questions, and engage deeply in conversations about brain health.

As Rayna Zhao, Clinical Research Coordinator from Tee Lab shared, “We want to bring accessible brain-health education directly to older adults who would benefit most. Many Chinese American seniors face language and cultural barriers in traditional healthcare settings, so meeting them in familiar community spaces helps us connect in a way that feels comfortable for them.”

Thank you, Tee Lab, for your commitment to culturally and linguistically informed research and community outreach.

We recently welcomed volunteers from Head-Royce School to CEI PACE Temescal for a truly heartwarming day of connection. Students brought their talents—music, arts and crafts, exercise, even a few chess moves—and spent time getting to know our participants.

This visit is part of a growing partnership with Head-Royce, whose eighth graders also spend time each year with the seniors. Students get to practice their foreign language skills - creating meaningful bridges across language and generations.

These moments remind us how powerful intergenerational and multilingual community-building can be—everyone walks away a little more inspired.

Today is Giving Tuesday. Meet Esterline.

When Esterline first came to the Center for Elders’ Independence, she was in crisis. After a lifetime of caring for others, her own health began to fail. A stroke affected her balance, leaving her unsafe at home—and like so many Bay Area seniors, she was doing everything she could to stay independent, even as the gap kept widening. CEI stepped in with comprehensive, wrap-around care but there were still urgent needs outside of her health plan—needs that put her housing at risk.

That’s where the CEI Foundation’s Helping Hands Fund changed everything. Because of donor support, Esterline received the urgent help she needed to stay safe in her home and continue living with dignity.

This Giving Tuesday, you can be that lifeline to seniors like Esterline.

Thank you Univision and reporter Carla Farias Muriel for highlighting our work! At CEI, we make every effort to help seniors stay engaged in their community —especially during the holiday season when isolation hits the hardest. As part of the segment, we shared practical tips on keeping the brain healthy. Fortunately, the activities that can help delay dementia and Alzheimers are the same ones that help seniors live vibrant, healthy lives.

A big shout-out to Simon Rodriguez for the wonderful interview and for helping raise awareness during .

We were delighted to welcome volunteers from Youth Health Focus (YHF) Berkeley for a Healthy Eating Workshop at PACE Temescal! Their student leaders shared practical nutrition tips with the seniors, offering materials and presentations in Chinese, Spanish, and Korean to reflect our multilingual community.

The event included education, conversation, and even a round of culturally themed bingo—bringing health and connection together in a way our participants truly enjoyed. We’re grateful for YHF’s commitment to supporting older adults and for the opportunity to build a meaningful, multigenerational community together.

You can learn more about their work at youthhealthfocus.org. For more information on PACE and CEI, visit our website at elders.org.

This season, participants at the Center for Elders’ Independence are thankful for the care, community, and connection that help them live each day with purpose and joy—and for the dedicated staff, friends, and family who make every moment brighter.

What are you grateful for?

October offered so many meaningful opportunities to connect with our community.

We joined the Unity Council’s Día de los Mu***os celebration, honoring tradition and remembering loved ones. We spent time with partners at Joybound’s Veterans Community Builder of Contra Costa County, uplifting those who serve our veteran population. And we were proud to host the Wedesi Diwali Festival at our very own PACE Tri-Valley Center, celebrating light, culture, and community together.

Each event reflects our commitment to meeting seniors where they are—across cultures, neighborhoods, and celebrations. We’re grateful for every partner who helps us build these connections and for every resident who stops by to learn more about CEI.
