Center for Elders' Independence PACE senior healthcare plan serving San Francisco East Bay residents. We keep seniors living at home

Center for Elders' Independence (CEI) is a non-profit health plan that's been serving the San Francisco Bay Area for over 30 years, providing the Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) to seniors age 55 and older who prefer not to move into a nursing home but whose health problems make it impossible for them to stay at home without the help of caregivers. PACE is a nationally recognized model of long-term care that offers a broad range of medical, social, and day health services in home-based and community-based settings. CEI's mission statement is to provide high quality, affordable, integrated health care services to the elderly, which promote autonomy, quality of life, and the ability of individuals to live in their communities. The Fund for Elders' Independence (FEI) is a foundation supporting the work of the Center for Elders' Independence.

Behind every care plan is a connector, an advocate, and a steady hand.

This National Social Work Month, we’re celebrating the incredible social workers at CEI — who serve as the hub of each participant’s care team, bringing people together, navigating options, and connecting individuals to the services they need.

They don’t just coordinate care—they build trust, empower choice, and make whole-person care possible every day.

Thank you for all that you do.

Spring has sprung at CEI!

In celebration of the Spring Equinox, participants at PACE Tri-Valley welcomed the new season with a hands-on gardening activity—planting spring flowers and beautiful succulents. It was a joyful way to connect with nature, nurture something new, and share in the spirit of renewal together.

Here’s to fresh starts and the simple joy of getting our hands in the soil. Learn more about how we support whole-person care and wellness at elders.org.

As Ramadan came to a close and the three-day celebration of Eid begins, the nutrition team at PACE Concord created space to share culture, spark curiosity, and learn from one another.

As part of National Nutrition Month, participants gathered for a suhoor-inspired cooking demo and breakfast—an opportunity to experience the traditions behind the meal and the meaning it holds. The menu featured nutrient-rich, calorie-dense foods like nuts, dates and yogurt, opening up conversations around both cultural practices and wellness.

At CEI, moments like these are about more than a meal—they’re about connection, understanding, and learning from the diverse communities we serve.

This Women’s History Month, under the theme “Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” we’re shining a spotlight on a visionary leader who’s shaping the future of care in our community. We celebrate our President and CEO Maria Zamora, as she marks five milestone years with Center for Elders’ Independence.

Maria embodies the power of women in leadership: courageous, compassionate, and committed to building healthier, stronger, more equitable communities. With decades of experience in health and senior care, and an unwavering dedication to PACE’s all-inclusive mission, Maria has uplifted our work with energy and purpose.

In just five years, Maria has helped CEI reach more people and strengthen our impact, expanding access to care for those who need it most. Her leadership shows that when we support our most vulnerable, we uplift seniors, their families and communities across Alameda and Contra Costa Counties.

We’re profoundly grateful for Maria’s leadership and proud to honor the legacy she’s building — advancing a more sustainable, compassionate future for senior healthcare. 🫶

This Women’s History Month, we’re honoring Marie-Louise Ansak, a social worker whose bold idea became the foundation for the PACE model of care.

She believed seniors deserved more than institutional care—they deserved coordinated, community-based support that honored their independence.

At CEI, we’re proud to carry that vision forward every day. Learn more at elders.org.

Holi Brings Color and Creativity to CEI Centers

On March 4, participants at CEI’s West County and Temescal PACE centers celebrated Holi, the vibrant festival of colors that marks the arrival of spring and a time of joy and renewal. Each center hosted its own arts and crafts activities, where participants created colorful projects inspired by the spirit of the holiday.

At CEI, honoring cultural holidays is one of the ways we celebrate the diverse traditions of our community.

Out in the streets, in the crowds, and in the heart of the celebration—Center for Elders' Independence was proud to join Oakland’s Chinese Lunar New Year Parade!

Participants and staff members came together at the parade hosted by the Oakland Chinatown Improvement Council. It was joyful opportunity to stand alongside our community and honor the traditions that matter to the people we serve.

Events like this remind us that building community goes beyond the walls of our centers.

We're celebrating a major milestone: PACE programs now serve more than 100,000 seniors nationwide! As the 9th PACE program in the nation, CEI is proud to have helped lead the way to empowering older adults to live healthy, independent lives at home. “PACE’s growth is inspiring. This expansion means more seniors now have access to this incredible model of care,” says Maria Zamora, CEI’s President and CEO.

Congratulations to the dedicated team members, participants, and partners who've made this possible. Zamora adds, “PACE is personal to so many of us, and we find joy together in seeing it thrive!”
