⭐️What do you need to feel your best?
For some, it might be:
-Eating enough and regularly
-Time alone, space
-Rest, quiet, or less screen time
-Connection with others
-Joyful, non-compulsive movement (if cleared)
-Time outside
-Laughter

There are a lot of things that help us feel grounded. And when some of these start to disappear, it’s easy feel off - reduced mood, energy, poor body image, increased stress, return of eating disorder symptoms…

Everyone’s “wheel” looks different.

⭐️What do you need to feel your best?

Congratulations to on the recent release of her book, “A Woman’s Guide to Menopause, Body Image, and Emotional Well-being at Midlife” by . I was honored to contribute quotes and content to this excellent, evidenced based, ESSENTIAL resource for all women (and their loved ones). As the sole author on this book, Signe did not have to worry about us “voting out” her jokes this time….and she nailed it, this book is both informative AND funny.

Severe nausea is one of the common side effects of taking GLP-1s, like Mounjaro and Wegovy.

Wendy Sterling, Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian, shares, “Restriction causes a suppression of gastric enzymes and leads to a vicious cycle of gut distress, poor motility, constipation, gastroparesis, and bloating, which leave people feeling nauseous and generally uninspired about food.”

Signe Darpinian, eating disorder specialist and author of the forthcoming book, A Woman’s Guide to Menopause, Body Image, and Emotional Well-being at Midlife, is quick to refute the claim that nausea is no big deal. “If somebody feels nauseous, it massively dysregulates emotion, and that has a domino effect. We can’t be present. We can’t focus. That really suppresses our values and our ability to be in our life.”

No one likes feeling nauseous, but a reminder that adding consistent, regular meals and snacks will actually help to eliminate the nausea, not just put a band-aid on it.

Hair loss is common during the eating disorder journey and can be quite distressing.
Learn why this happens, common triggers, and recommendations.

There is a lot out there on pills, potions, and supplements to take but understanding that this will get better once the eating disorder is in a more stable place is important! Most never need to add extra supplements (unless deficient).Check with your MD and dietitian if you are looking for further guidance? And hang in there !

A new analysis by just revealed that over two-thirds of 23 widely available protein powders and ready-to-drink shakes contained lead levels above what considers safe for a single serving — in some cases 10x or more above their level of concern.
Mass gainers (bigger servings, more powder) and plant based proteins (due to the soil) were the highest offenders.

But this isn’t exactly new. The Clean Label Project has been sounding the alarm for years, repeatedly finding heavy metals like lead, cadmium, and arsenic in protein powders and supplements.

There are workarounds!

👉 Choose proteins that are third-party tested — like NSF Certified for Sport®
or Informed Choice . Both have apps, which you can download and see if your supplement is safe. This is so critical for all supplements, not just protein powders.
👉 Get your protein from food! Chicken, beef, fish, beans, tofu, milk, yogurt, cheese, plant based milks, nuts, seeds, eggs - go a long way in helping you to meet your protein needs.

⚠️ What do these findings mean for your protein bars, chips, bagels, and cereals? Unless specified, those products are NOT using third-party tested protein sources, meaning they could be at risk for having higher levels of heavy metals.

Great day in Stanislaus County conducting a training workshop for clinicians. We covered medical complications, recognizing and diagnosing eating disorders, nutritional treatment, and therapeutic approaches for eating disorders.

One of the most important things for clinicians to realize is that eating disorders affect EVERYONE: all bodies, genders, races, ethnicities, ages, and income levels. You don’t have to be “emaciated” to have an eating disorder. You can’t tell just by looking at someone if they are sick, or the degree to which they are sick. Yet many think,  “I can’t possibly be sick enough to warrant treatment.”  Or worse, the clinician misses the diagnosis.

There is an acronym “S.W.A.G” which stands for a stereotype - a false narrative - of who gets eating disorders: “Skinny White Affluent Girls.” This causes countless others to be missed and overlooked: males, people in larger bodies, and those in BIPOC communities. Delaying care leads to more severe illness, longer recovery, and higher treatment costs.
