Today, on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, WORLD stands in solidarity with women, girls, and gender-expansive people across the globe who continue to experience violence in all its forms—physical, emotional, psychological, economic, and structural.

For women living with or vulnerable to HIV, violence is not just a parallel issue—it is a driver of health outcomes. Decades of research show that violence is directly associated with:
🔸 Increased HIV vulnerability and exposure
🔸 Reduced ability to negotiate condom or PrEP use
🔸 Higher rates of trauma, depression, and anxiety
🔸 Poorer viral suppression due to disrupted medication adherence
🔸 Unstable housing, food insecurity, and reduced access to care
🔸 Avoidance of medical systems due to stigma, fear, or lack of safety

At WORLD, we see these realities every day. Our programs are intentionally designed to be trauma-informed, culturally grounded, and centered on safety, dignity, and healing.

Through:
✨ Peer-led support groups
✨ MAI trauma-informed sessions and wellness discussions
✨ HIV testing, education, and linkage to trauma-responsive care
✨ Case management, safety planning, and navigation support
✨ Community events that foster belonging, connection, and empowerment

…we work to ensure that women living with and impacted by HIV are not defined by the violence they’ve experienced, but supported in their healing, resilience, and autonomy.

Ending violence against women is essential to ending the HIV epidemic.
On this day—and every day—we recommit to building communities where women feel safe, seen, supported, and free.

🧡 WORLD stands with survivors.
🧡 WORLD believes women deserve safety, dignity, and care.
🧡 WORLD will continue to advocate, educate, and uplift until all forms of violence end.

This government shutdown didn’t have to happen. Republicans in Congress are holding up the extension of premium tax credits — and it’s people living with HIV who will pay the price.

Higher premiums mean fewer people can stay in care. Strained safety-net programs like Ryan White and ADAP. Interrupted treatment. Worsening health outcomes.

We’ve come too far in the fight against HIV to go backward.

✊ End the shutdown. Protect health care. Stand with people living with HIV.

Public health isn’t partisan. It’s protection.
Congress must fully fund HIV-prevention services that save lives and sustain progress toward ending the HIV epidemic.

HIV-prevention funding saves lives, strengthens communities, and keeps our public-health infrastructure strong. Every dollar cut today will risk countless lives and cost American taxpayers more tomorrow.

Our hearts are heavy as we grieve the loss of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a Black transgender woman, activist and icon, at the forefront of trans rights for more than 50 years. Miss Major, known to many as simply "Mama"
participated in the Stonewall uprising of 1969, in which LGBTQ+ people stood up against police harassment at the Stonewall Inn in NYC’s Greenwich Village.

She faced many hurdles during her life to include homelessness and incarceration. These challenges fuled her activism.
In 2005, Miss Major joined San Francisco based Trans Gender Variant and Intersex Justice Project (TGIJP) as a staff organizer, and later as Executive Director, to lead the group's efforts advocating for trans women and trans rights.
She often spoke out against the prison system, which she said contributes to the incarceration of transgender individuals, particularly trans people of color and low income individuals.
Her death was announced by the House of GG—Griffin-Gracy Retreat and Educational Center, which she founded. She died "in the comfort of her home and surrounded by loved ones in Little Rock, Arkansas," says a statement from the center. "Her enduring legacy is a testament to her resilience, activism, and dedication to creating safe spaces for Black trans communities and all trans people — we are eternally grateful for Miss Major's life, her contributions and how deeply she poured into those she loved."

You will not be forgotten.
Rest In Peace.🏳️‍⚧️
