This web forum is sponsored by the National Overdose Prevention Network, and produced by Dialogue4Health, both programs of PHI Center for Health Leadership & Impact.

from PHI's Bridge Center:

Published last month in JGIM Journal of General Internal Medicine, a new study led by PHI’s Bridge Center, in partnership with Marshall Medical Center, finds that hospitalized patients with alcohol and/or opioid use disorders who received consultation from a substance use navigator were twice as likely to begin FDA-approved medications used for addiction treatment and experienced a 64 percent lower rate of 30-day unplanned readmissions compared to those who did not receive navigator support. Importantly, this study highlights that such significant results are possible in small, rural hospitals.

“The study reinforces the value of supporting evidence-based treatment and patient navigation directly into hospital care,” said PHI's Arianna Campbell, DMSc, MPH, PA-C, CAQ-EM, DFAAPA, a co-founder and principal investigator at PHI’s Bridge Center and lead author of the study. “When hospitals take a medication-first approach and offer consults from navigators with lived experience, patients are more likely to engage in a sustainable treatment plan with a path to recovery. Marshall’s model demonstrates what is possible across hospitals of any size.”

Grief isn’t just bereavement - it is experienced in many types of life events where we feel a sense of loss. Join PHI's Dialogue4Health and Cypress Resilience Project on Wednesday, December 10, for a training exploring why the holidays are difficult for grievers and what actions we can take to help someone living with loss. Presenters will discuss what is and isn’t helpful when we are supporting those around us, and offer some practical ways to show up for the folks we care about - including ourselves.

According to the 2024 California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), 1 in every 11 Californians ages 12 and older — approximately 3.1 million people — said they experienced an act of hate in the past year. We all know these numbers are alarming. Experiencing and witnessing hate is associated with several serious mental and physical consequences, including PTSD and depression, and make communities feel unwelcome.

On Tuesday, December 9, researchers from PHI and the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research will present findings from two new studies that take a deeper look at experiences with hate and use of and access to support.

Every dollar of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) supports whole communities by allowing millions of people to put healthy, nutritious meals on the table, keeping kids fed and supporting grocery and local food stores. This blog from PHI’s Berkeley Media Studies Group (BMSG) provides effective messaging for demonstrating the ripple effects of the SNAP program and can help public health communicators tell a more complete story about SNAP at any time, not just amid urgent crises:
