Are You or your Client facing fear mongering around Late Pregnancy & Induction?

Fear-Mongering: "Your risk for stillbirth more than doubles from 40 weeks to 42 weeks."
Statistics: "While there's an increase in stillbirth rates from 0.07% at 40 weeks to 0.32% at 42 weeks, it's crucial to note that even at 42 weeks, your baby's chance of survival is more than 99%." (DEKKER, 2019)

Fear mongering Claims may state that the risk of stillbirth at 41 weeks is 1 in 1,000 and that this risk dramatically increases to 2 or 3 in 1,000 at 42 weeks

A more accurate and nuanced understanding of the data shows a smaller increase in risk. According to studies and systematic reviews:

• Risk of Stillbirth at 40 Weeks: Approximately 1 in 1,000.
• Risk of Stillbirth at 41 Weeks: Increases to about 1.2 to 1.3 in 1,000.
• Risk of Stillbirth at 42 Weeks: Further increases to about 1.5 to 2 in 1,000

Comparison to 35 Weeks:
• The risk of stillbirth at 35 weeks is approximately 1.5 to 1.6 per 1,000 pregnancies, which is higher than at 41 weeks.

While the risk of stillbirth does increase slightly after 41 weeks, the absolute risk remains relatively low and is lower than the risk at 35 weeks. This nuanced understanding is important for making informed decisions about labor induction and managing expectations during late-term pregnancies.

If there were an immediate and significant danger to the baby at or past 41 weeks, the time required to schedule and carry out an induction, which can take 2-4 days, could pose a risk in itself. Induction of labor involves several steps, including cervical ripening, administration of medications like oxytocin, and monitoring the labor process, which can extend over several days depending on how the body responds - You could instead just wait during that same time frame for labor and birth to happen on its own, in nearly the same time frame.
