Morning baking lessons with our toddler. Teaching following directions, science, math, meal prep, fine motor skills and cooperation. We used almond flour pizza dough and added: zucchini, cheddar, tomato sauce, spinach and Parmesan. Since the oven was already on, we decided to add some simple blender muffins and today they were banana/oat/zucchini/chocolate chip!

✨ Words of wisdom ✨

“Put them in water or take them outside.” It was the first useful parenting advice I ever got. “Sleep when the baby sleeps”? I think the polite word for that gem is poppycock. But this particular axiom has saved me many times over.

I don’t remember how old my son was when I called my mom in tears because I couldn’t stop his, but his age was probably measured in weeks. Maybe days. “Nothing is working; I don’t know what else to try,” I sobbed. “He’s not hungry or sleepy or wet.” “Try giving him a bath,” she suggested. “Or bundle him up and take him outside for some fresh air. I always say to take them outside or put them in water, and usually, the grumpiness goes away.” It worked that day, and it’s worked many times since. We’ve done baths at 10 a.m. I’ve paced our driveway with a baby in my arms at 2 a.m. And today, at 5:15 p.m. when my children were fighting for the 17th time since they got home from school and I was about to lose it, instead I put one in the bath and I sent the other outside and now maybe all three of us will survive until Dad gets home.
Almost nine years later, it still works.
I can’t give you advice about sleep schedules or feedings or Montessori-approved toys. I don’t know what we’re gonna do about Tik Tok and Snapchat in a few years. But when they’re falling apart at the seams for no apparent reason, take them outside or put them in water.
Oh, and it works on grown-ups, too."

Feeling this 👌🏼

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but attachment parenting in a detached society is exhausting.
No. It’s not your baby.
There is nothing wrong with them if they want to be held all the time.
No. It’s not you.
You’re not doing it wrong.
Your feelings of exhaustion and depletion and being touched out are normal- considering the weight you’re carrying. Those feelings, and the deep ache underneath them - are a reminder that you were never meant to do this alone.
Babies want to be held. And we want to hold them close. Exclusive/extended breastfeeding, cosleeping, babywearing- all of these are intuitive, ancestral practices that have kept our species alive throughout history. Attachment parenting is just parenting!!
But never before have we parented in such isolation. There were always other hands stirring the soup pot, other aunties, and sisters, and uncles and grandmas, and cousins, and neighbors helping with the daily tasks and child rearing. Other arms carrying the weight of raising humanity. Together.
And now, it’s just you. Alone in the kitchen, trying to stir the soup and bounce the baby and play with the toddler and keep an eye on the big kid and answer the phone and sweep up the mess and tackle the laundry and .....
No matter how magical your baby wrap is — it can’t take the place of a whole village.
So no, you’re not doing it wrong. You’re just trying to stay connected in a world set on tearing you apart.
But don’t give up mama. I know you’re tired and touched out, but you’re giving your baby exactly what she needs. And maybe one day, when she’s raising her own babies, there will be a village around her, helping her hold it all together.

Well, it’s happening! Maya decided she was ready to explore the world of solid foods. Like most baby related milestones, I have thought long and hard about what foods to introduce “first” and in reality she decided she didn’t want to go to bed, so we sat her at the table and she was extremely curious about our dinner (Dads steamed broccoli) so we gave it a go. She was into it!

She had been practicing holding her trainer spoon for weeks when she watches me prep food in the kitchen so she’s mastered the spoon game. Go Maya! We’re so excited to feed this eager eater 🥦😍

PSA: sunscreen recall! This is why I stopped using these products years ago. One helpful app to help navigate purchasing clean personal hygiene products including sunscreen is the EWG app and Think Dirty.

J&J said it was taking the action after detecting a potentially cancer-causing chemical in some samples.

Especially important for pregnant individuals but really we should all be avoiding these…

If you're pregnant, or trying to become pregnant, it's likely you're considering how to limit your exposure to toxic chemicals. After all, you no longer have just your health to think about, you also have that of your future child.

Let's reframe sleep regression! During these periods of troubled sleep, our babies and toddlers are actually experiencing a beautiful developmental progression.

This is our child’s brain in action, mastering new skills like rolling over, crawling, walking and more.

It’s handy for parents to know that these progressions can last anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks and most likely coincide with a cognitive or developmental milestone.
