Topline Talk! 🐎✨

We’ve partnered with Farmhouse Chiropractic and owner/founder Dr. Jillian Johnson to bring you an educational series focused on equine topline health.

This week, Dr. Johnson is discussing Farmhouse's unique approach to studying compensation patterns through the nervous system by aiming to allow the muscles to relax and break the cycles of compensation.

Next week, we are going to take a closer look at the other forms of maintenance that can impact a horse's topline.

👉 Drop your topline questions in the comments so we can cover them in the series!

Sometimes the tension, discomfort, or movement patterns we experience aren’t purely structural. The nervous system can also influence how the body moves, feels, and performs.

At Farmhouse Chiropractic, we use muscle testing to help determine where an imbalance may be coming from.

Muscle testing observes how the body responds to specific stimuli, allowing us to identify whether something is structural or related to how the nervous system is responding.

When we understand the root cause, we can support the body more effectively.

Awareness creates alignment.

✨ Horses Find Strength in Stability ✨

True strength isn’t built from big movement.
It’s built from control.

Before a horse can collect, extend, or power off the ground — they must first stabilize.

That’s where the stabilizer muscles come in.

These smaller, deeper muscles:
• Support joints
• Protect the spine
• Control limb placement
• Improve balance and coordination
• Prevent compensation patterns

When stabilizers are weak or not firing properly, bigger muscles take over — and that’s when we start to see tension, resistance, uneven development, or performance plateaus.

One of the ways we help activate and strengthen these muscles?
Sure FootÂŽ pads.

By creating subtle instability, the pads stimulate proprioception and encourage the nervous system to engage deep stabilizers. The result:

✔️ Improved balance
✔️ Better posture
✔️ Stronger foundational support
✔️ A more confident, grounded horse

Strength built on stability lasts.

Because a powerful athlete starts with a solid foundation.

When we think about strength in horses, we often picture the big, powerful muscles that create movement. But true strength begins deeper in the body—with the stabilizer muscles.

Stabilizers are the smaller muscles responsible for joint support, balance, and control. They help your horse maintain posture, coordinate movement, and protect the body from injury during motion and performance.

When stabilizers are working well, your horse can:
• Maintain better balance under saddle
• Move more efficiently and fluidly
• Protect joints and soft tissues
• Build power on top of a stable foundation

When they’re not functioning well, the body often compensates—leading to uneven movement, tension, or increased injury risk.

This week we’re focusing on building strong foundations, because true strength comes from stability first.

Equestrian sport asks for something unique from the human body: the ability to remain stable while moving with another living, breathing athlete beneath you. When the rider’s body is balanced and aligned, the forces created by the horse’s movement travel efficiently through the body. When alignment is lost, those forces get absorbed unevenly—leading to unnecessary wear and tear over time.

Ideally, a rider’s ear, shoulder, hip, and heel stack in a straight line. This alignment allows the body to act like a well-organized suspension system. Movement from the horse flows through the pelvis, spine, and core, dispersing forces evenly rather than concentrating them in one joint or muscle group.

When alignment is compromised—whether from leaning forward, gripping with the knees, or collapsing through the core—the body has to compensate. Instead of forces being distributed through the whole body, certain areas begin to absorb more stress than they were designed to handle.

Balanced riders aren’t just born—they are built through thoughtful strengthening and body awareness.

Developing core stability allows the rider to maintain alignment without gripping or bracing. Strengthening the glutes, deep abdominal muscles, and stabilizers of the pelvis supports a position where the rider can absorb motion through the hips rather than the knees or lower back.

This doesn’t just improve performance. It protects the rider’s body over years of training and competition.
