We are very pleased to introduce you to the newest member of our practice, Dewey Watkins, LPC!

Dewey is a licensed professional counselor who treats teens and adults who are experiencing feelings of worry, sadness, frustration, and overall dissatisfaction in their lives. Through talk therapy, he seeks to educate, equip, and encourage those pursuing a better quality of life to reach their goals and dreams.

He attended William Carey University and earned a master’s degree in 2003 in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Individual Counseling. During his 20 years of practice, Dewey has provided counseling services in both inpatient and outpatient settings. He believes in the need for human connection within the counseling process; and of utmost importance to him are the values of respect, vulnerability, equity, and inclusion.

Dewey’s counseling style is CBT-based (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), using simple, practical, and pragmatic approaches to overcoming mental health problems. He seeks to help those who are struggling by exploring their difficulties, identifying their desired changes, and guiding them towards solutions.

He abides by this firm foundation: “We all wish to understand and to be understood, especially when we are facing difficulties in life. I believe in the power of relationships, and that love, acceptance, and healing can be found in them. I want you to feel seen, heard, and valued - then together we can develop solutions and strategies to return you to peace of mind and satisfaction in your life.”

Dewey is an avid outdoor sportsman and enjoys hunting and fishing with his 3 brothers. He and his wife enjoy singing in the church choir, spending time spoiling their cat Kay Kay, and planning their next adventure to a “bucket list” destination!

Join us in welcoming Dewey - and if his values align with your own, and you've been looking for that "right fit" in a counseling partnership, give us a call. We'll answer your questions and provide you with next steps towards a "mentally-healthy" 2024.

We know it’s scary. And we’re here to support you through it. Give us a call. 228-819-2171

Oh yeah, I know exactly what this article is talking about!
I just never knew it had a name...did you? "Code-Switching"? Whaaa?

Read on. It's incredibly spot on and thought-provoking at the same time.

A psychologist explains code-switching — what it is, why we do it and the ways it can both benefit and harm our mental health.

Does it seem like your phone is ALWAYS in your hand?? If you're 100% honest with yourself, it's likely because it is! What should you be doing right now, instead of scrolling and stopping to read this post? Whatever it is, its completion is now delayed. Oops!

You know it can't be good for you, spending all that time moving from app to app in a frenzied pace to keep up with all the dings and buzzes of the never-ending notifications...but you do it anyway. And so do I! But serious talk here...what could we stand to gain by exercising even a little more self-control and restraint? Well, here's a few things worth considering:

😴😴Improved Sleep Quality: Limiting your screen time, especially before bedtime, can positively impact your sleep quality. The blue light emitted by your phone's screen can interfere with the production of the sleep hormone melatonin; meaning you'll get better sleep when your screen exposure is reduced.

😁😁Enhanced Mental Well-Being: Reduced screen time can contribute to improved mental health by lowering your stress level and reducing the risk of conditions like anxiety and depression associated with excessive screen use.

💪💪Increased Physical Activity: Limiting screen time encourages individuals, particularly children, to engage in more physical activities. Outdoor play and exercise promote overall health, reducing the risks of sedentary behavior.

👁👁Better Eye Health: Prolonged screen exposure can strain your eyes and contribute to issues like digital eye strain and discomfort. Limiting screen time provides relief to your eyes and supports better eye health.

🤝🤝Enhanced Social Connections: Spending less time on screens allows for more face-to-face interactions, strengthening your social bonds and relationships. This is essential for emotional well-being and a sense of connectedness.

🤓🤓Improved Focus and Productivity: Excessive screen use can contribute to attention fatigue. Limiting screen time helps you maintain focus and concentration, leading to improved productivity and task completion.

We get it. These bright little rectangles of unlimited entertainment are super tempting...all the time! But make a conscious effort to give your mind a break - your posture too!

Stand up and stretch. Take a walk. Talk to a person, FACE TO FACE!

Give your downtime to a person, or an animal, or even another hobby or project from time to time. You absolutely won't regret it.
