A homestead exemption is a property tax break that reduces the taxable value of a homeowner’s primary residence. This lowers the amount of property taxes you owe each year.
How it works
• You must own and live in the home as your primary residence.
• You apply through your county tax assessor’s office (in Mississippi, that’s your county’s Chancery Clerk or Tax Assessor).
• The exemption reduces the assessed value, not the market value. Example: If your home is assessed at $150,000 and you get a $7,500 exemption, you are then taxed as if your home is worth $142,500. Again, assessed value is NOT the same as market value.
