March MATness ~ Push Ups

Push-Ups bring the sequence full circle — returning to standing while integrating strength, control, and coordination through the entire body.

Each phase requires control — not just the push-up itself, but how you transition in and out of it. It’s about maintaining connection from start to finish.

Benefits
• Strengthens the upper body and core
• Improves coordination and control
• Builds full-body strength
• Encourages integration of the entire sequence

Primary Muscles
Chest, shoulders, triceps, abdominals, and spinal stabilizers.

Push-Ups remind us that Pilates is a full-body method — everything working together in a sequence with control and intention.

March MATness Day 31 ~ Control Balance

Control Balance is one of the more advanced exercises in the sequence, combining inversion, flexibility, and control.

It’s a balance between stability and mobility — maintaining control while allowing movement through the legs.

Benefits
• Strengthens the abdominals
• Improves flexibility and control
• Challenges coordination and balance
• Develops full-body integration

Primary Muscles
Abdominals, hip flexors, hamstrings, spinal stabilizers, and deep core muscles.

Control Balance represents how far the work can progress when strong fundamentals are in place.

March MATness Day 30 ~ The Seal & Crab

Seal and Crab bring rhythm and control into the rolling work, adding a slightly different challenge.

Both exercises rely on maintaining a compact, rounded shape as you roll through the spine. Seal introduces rhythm and control with the clap of the feet, while Crab adds a layer of coordination with changing positions.

The challenge is to stay controlled and centered, even as the movement becomes more dynamic.

Benefits
• Improves spinal mobility
• Enhances coordination
• Strengthens the abdominals
• Develops control in dynamic movement

Primary Muscles
Abdominals, hip flexors, spinal stabilizers, and deep core muscles.

March MATness Day 29 ~ Boomerang

Boomerang brings together several elements of the mat work — rolling, balance, coordination, and control — into one continuous sequence.

This is a true flow exercise. The movement transitions seamlessly from a roll-over into a balanced lift, then forward into a controlled fold.

It requires you to stay connected through the center while the shape of the body changes, without pausing or losing control.

Benefits
• Strengthens the abdominals
• Improves coordination
• Challenges balance and control
• Encourages fluid, connected movement

Primary Muscles
Abdominals, hip flexors, spinal stabilizers, and deep core muscles.

The Boomerang reflects how the method evolves — not just strength, but how well you can connect movement together.

March MATness Day 28 ~ Side Bend

Side Bend challenges lateral strength and control, asking the body to lift and support itself in a side plank position.

Benefits

• Strengthens the lateral chain
• Builds shoulder stability
• Improves control and coordination
• Encourages full-body integration

Primary Muscles
Obliques, shoulders, glutes, and deep stabilizers.

March MATness Day 27 ~ Side Kick Kneeling

Side Kick Kneeling takes the lateral work from the mat and adds a new level of challenge by bringing the body more upright. It requires strength, balance, and control as the body stabilises on one arm and one knee.

Benefits

• Strengthens the hips and outer thighs
• Builds shoulder and core stability
• Improves balance and coordination
• Encourages alignment in a more functional position
• Develops lateral strength through the body

Primary Muscles
Gluteus medius and minimus, obliques, shoulder stabilizers, hip flexors, and deep core muscles.

March MATness Day 26 ~ Leg Pull (Back or Up)

Leg Pull Back (or Up) takes the strength and control of the plank and turns it around, placing the work into the back of the body. It challenges shoulder stability, hip extension, and full-body coordination.

The focus is on maintaining height and control, rather than letting the hips drop or the movement become rushed.

Benefits

• Strengthens the shoulders and upper body
• Activates the glutes and hamstrings
• Builds posterior chain strength
• Improves coordination and control
• Encourages full-body stability

Primary Muscles
Glutes, hamstrings, shoulders, triceps, spinal extensors, and deep abdominal stabilizers.

Leg Pull Back highlights how strength must be supported from both the front and back of the body. It’s a reminder that balanced development is key to moving well.
