A routine screening recommendation changed everything.
In this WLOX-TV feature, Singing River patient Andrea Aguilar shares her colorectal cancer story. At 45, with no symptoms and no family history, a colonoscopy revealed stage 3 colon cancer.
As Ramon Brown, MD, FACS, FASCRS, explains in the story, colorectal cancer is being diagnosed more often in younger adults—which is why screening now begins at age 45.
During Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, it’s an important reminder not to delay screening.

COLORECTAL CANCER: Andrea Aguilar, 45, had no symptoms and no family history of the disease. It was her new doctor who recommended she schedule a colonoscopy—an appointment she said she almost put off.
“I really thought that the age was 50, so I thought that I had five more years,” Aguilar said. “You can go in and have no symptoms and for me, no symptoms, but I walked out of the appointment with Stage 3 colon cancer.” >>> https://www.wlox.com/2026/03/13/colorectal-cancer-diagnosis-45-singing-river-patients-story/
