❗️GREAT READ... 🏋️♀️ FITNESS ISN'T 💥👊FIGHTING
A recent article tells the story of Riley Rehl, a fitness content creator who spent years doing Body Combat, a martial arts-inspired workout and decided to test herself in real training.
And she got a rude awakening.
And honestly, this happens all the time.
There’s a big difference between learning movements… and learning how to fight.
You only learn to fight when you’re dealing with resistance. When someone is actually trying to stop you. When mistakes have consequences.
That’s where everything changes.
I’ve seen people come from fitness classes thinking they understand striking or grappling, but once they step into a real environment, the timing, the pressure, the unpredictability… it’s a completely different world.
And that’s why jiu-jitsu stands out.
Because we can train at a very high level of intensity, almost every day.
Since we’re not exchanging punches or kicks, we can go close to 100% without the same level of damage you’d get in striking arts.
That’s a huge advantage.
In something like Muay Thai or boxing, you have to manage intensity. You can’t go all out every session without paying the price physically.
But in jiu-jitsu, you can experience real resistance, real pressure, and real problem-solving… consistently.
And that’s what builds real skill.
I’ve been on both sides.
Before jiu-jitsu, I trained martial arts that were mostly based on passive drilling. Movements looked good, techniques made sense… but when it came to real situations, it didn’t translate the way I thought it would.
Everything changed when I started training with resisting opponents.
Rolling with people bigger, stronger, more experienced… that forces you to adapt. It forces you to learn.
You can’t fake it.
And that’s why so many people have that “shock” moment when they first try real grappling or sparring.
It’s not about looking good.
It’s about what actually works.
What do you think? Can fitness-based martial arts prepare someone for real fighting, or is resistance the only real teacher?
