Mount Sinai South Nassau’s Community Education Department and Mount Sinai-Wantagh teamed up with the Connor Kasin Memorial Foundationto provide free EKG screenings for more than 35 student-athletes on Massapequa's ice hockey team on Monday, February 9.
The pilot project was held in memory of Connor Kasin, a 17-year-old Massapequa High School senior who tragically passed away after collapsing on the ice last November. The leading cause of death among young athletes is sudden cardiac arrest. Relatively rare but serious conditions can cause electrical or mechanical problems of the heart. Some heart conditions and rhythm abnormalities can be detected early on through EKG screening.
The EKGs were evaluated by David Neubert, MD, Director of Prehospital Medicine, and Emergency Department Physician Assistant Courtney Ciesla, PA-C, both from Mount Sinai South Nassau.
