Mount Sinai South Nassau’s Community Education Department and Mount Sinai-Wantagh teamed up with the Connor Kasin Memorial Foundationto provide free EKG screenings for more than 35 student-athletes on Massapequa's ice hockey team on Monday, February 9.

The pilot project was held in memory of Connor Kasin, a 17-year-old Massapequa High School senior who tragically passed away after collapsing on the ice last November. The leading cause of death among young athletes is sudden cardiac arrest. Relatively rare but serious conditions can cause electrical or mechanical problems of the heart. Some heart conditions and rhythm abnormalities can be detected early on through EKG screening.

The EKGs were evaluated by David Neubert, MD, Director of Prehospital Medicine, and Emergency Department Physician Assistant Courtney Ciesla, PA-C, both from Mount Sinai South Nassau.

The Mount Sinai South Nassau community mourns the loss of our long time advisory board member Wayne Lipton. Wayne volunteered his time and business expertise to help advance health care on the South Shore and lent us his musical talents each year to help oversee entertainment at the hospital’s annual fundraising gala. He was a dedicated and great friend to the hospital and he will be deeply missed.

Wayne Lipton, former Rockville Centre deputy mayor and trustee, entrepreneur, and principal cellist of the South Shore Symphony, died at 74, leaving a lasting legacy in local government, business, education, and the arts.
