There’s a very specific kind of heartbreak 💔
that comes from realizing… it wasn’t confusion, it wasn’t stress, it wasn’t bad timing.

It was a pattern. It was abuse.

And I didn’t stay because I was weak.
I stayed because I cared.

I stayed because I could see their pain.

I stayed because I believed in their potential.

I stayed because I thought love meant not giving up on people.

But love doesn’t ask you to abandon yourself.

At some point, you have to stop asking, “Why are they like this?” and start asking, “Why am I staying?”.

Ode to a man who cared for us while we were home ill from school. I used to feign illness to watch The Price is Right with him 😂

5 years ago, he went home 🏡

He’d help, and pick us up from school before my grandma retired, often putting us in the back of his pickup (leaving us tossing around the back amongst tools with no seatbelts), at our request, of course.

We’d wave at other cars through the small window in the back of the pick up. Perfectly okay in the 80’s... nowadays drivers would panic if they saw that 😂

I have so many memories playing at the beach, watching him “look for gold” with his metal detector. He’d place ads in the paper if he found something valuable; but otherwise had an Ariel’s Grotto 🧜🏼‍♀️ style treasure trove of findings in his garage. “Look at this stuff, isn’t it neat- I’m a bit of a hoarder, so it’s never complete” We never had to buy sunglasses.

He was very quiet. I was convinced as a child the only words in his vocabulary were, “No, Mmkay, and Mmbye.” He was always on the outside, a wallflower observing everything as it carried on.

I once sat on the couch next to him stating, “Grandpa, I love you!”, over a dozen times until he finally said it back. It was the only time he said it back, I was very satisfied- The 7 year old me felt victorious.

I suppose he was a bit like Ariel 🧜🏼‍♀️ in that his voice seemed to be hidden from him as he looked into a separate world, capturing treasures from it, and saving them in his cave.

Swift travels to the great beyond, Grandpa Norman. Thank you for my love of herbs and “snake oil”, nature programs, and digging for unseen treasures in this world 💜
