Irma Marie Young

Irma Marie (Wendt) Young, 92, of Grant, passed away peacefully at Perkins County Health and went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.

Irma was born on February 5, 1933, at the family farmhouse north of Madrid to Hermann and Elsa (K**k) Wendt. Her parents were from Germany, so German was spoken most of the time. When it was time to go to school, Irma had to learn the English language. The family traveled to Germany just before WWII broke out. They were warned to return to America, which they did. The family was proud to be Americans.

Irma attended school in Madrid, graduating in 1951. She attended college at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. She later taught school in Roscoe, Paxton, Elsie, and Madrid in a country school where Irma taught most grades. On June 7, 1953, Irma married Calvin Young at the Zion Lutheran Church in Grant. They were married for 68 years and from this union, two children, Peggy and Bruce, were born.

Calvin and Irma lived in Madrid for several years and then moved north of town until they moved to Grant in 1989. Calvin continued to farm, and Irma kept in contact with the two-way radio. In 2012, Calvin suffered a stroke. They continued their interest in farming with their children doing the work. Both enjoyed their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as all the family activities at Zion Lutheran and in the Perkins County area. Irma liked helping at the church, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and helping where she was needed.

Irma was a hard worker and enjoyed the outdoors, and helping around the farm by taking meals to the harvest field, driving the grain cart and truck during harvest, and going to get parts when needed. Irma also enjoyed playing cards, bowling, and gardening. She belonged to several Bible studies and clubs and was on the hospital board. She was good with numbers and served as treasurer for many of the organizations.

Irma was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Young, her parents Hermann and Elsa Wendt, her in-laws, John and Irene Young, her brothers-in-law, Stan Wiens, Lowell Cornelius, and Wendell Young, and her sister-in-law, Janet Young.

Irma is survived by her daughter, Peggy (Alan) Haenfler of Madrid, and their family, Trisha (Chris) Jobman of Lincoln, and children, Evan, Dylan and Morgan Jobman; Troy (Lauren) Haenfler of Omaha and children, Jaxson and Maddyx Haenfler; Irma's son, Bruce (Bo) Young of Madrid, and their family, Ashleigh (Jason) Noyes of Grant and children, Alexa, Landon, Jace, and Jagger Noyes; Aspen Brown (Ben Wisenhart) of Waverly and children, Kyler and Braxton Brown; Alyssa (Tyler) Thompson of Willington, CO and great-grand daughter, Ella Keller of Omaha; Austin Flook (Kristina Zwettler) of Breckenridge, CO and son, Keller Flook; James Flook of Los Angeles, CA; Deborah Flook of Aurora, CO and children, Gianna and Jaxson Flook; and Nick Braucht (Amanda Braucht) of Fort Worth, TX, and children Griffin and Margot; sister, Rosa Cornelius of Grant and her family; sister-in-law, Carolyn Wiens of Surprise, AZ; cousins, John Wendt of Lake Forest Park, WA and Erna (Keith) Gilster of Lincoln and their families; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Irma's memory for later designation. Condolences may be shared at bullocklongfuneralhome.com, where the service will be streamed live.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at 10:00 am at the Zion Lutheran Church in Grant with Pastor Michael Heckmann officiating. Burial will be in the Grant Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Monday, January 19, 2026, from 3 pm until 6 pm at the Bullock-Long Funeral Home in Grant.

Calvin Young

Calvin Young, 91, passed to his eternal life with his Savior on February 13, 2022, surrounded by family, friends, a great medical team, and his Pastor. He was blessed to have lived an incredible life.

Calvin John Young was born on the farm north of Madrid on October 10, 1930, to parents John and Irene (Vonderfecht) Young. Calvin was the middle child, having an older sister, Carolyn Young Weins, and a younger brother, Wendell Young. They learned the value of hard work early in life and moved to a farm south of Madrid where he lived many years and learned the skill of farming. He passed these important values of a strong work ethic and supporting your family on to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Attending school in Madrid, Calvin was gifted with outstanding athletic ability. He participated and excelled in all sports and took second in the State Track Meet in Pole Vaulting. He vaulted eleven feet with a bamboo pole, landing in the sand. The glory years are still talked about, and his love for pole vault was passed down to his grandchildren.

Calvin married his high school sweetheart, Irma Marie Wendt, on June 7, 1953, at Zion Lutheran Church in Grant, Nebraska. Thank goodness Irma was also raised in a farming family and understood the love for listening to AM radio and for driving the country roads for the joy of it. Calvin and Irma had their first child, Peggy Ann Young Haenfler, in 1954, followed by Bruce Douglas Young in 1956 and lived north of Madrid. Faith always being the center of their family; all were faithful members of the Zion Lutheran Church in Grant.

Calvin definitely passed his love for farming on to his children as Peggy and Bruce have followed the journey of their parents into the farming profession. Calvin and Irma moved to Grant in 1990 and Calvin continued to farm until he suffered a stroke in 2012. His mind remained sharp until the end, and he remained relevant and in contact with the farming industry, grain prices, and the grandchildren's activities and schedules. In his final years at Golden Ours, he lived for the visits from Irma and for seeing the grandchildren any time he could; it filled him with joy and life.

Calvin is survived by his wife of 68 years, Irma, by his children Peggy and Bruce, his son-in-law, Alan and daughter-in-law Lynette (Bo), his grandchildren Trisha and husband Chris, great-grandchildren Evan, Dillon, and Morgan, Troy, and wife Lauren, great-grandchildren, Jaxson and Maddox, Ashleigh and husband Jason, great-grandchildren Alexa, Landon, Jace, and Jagger, Aspen and partner Ben, great-grandchildren Kyler and Braxton and Alyssa, great-grandchild Ella. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn Young Weins, and many nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Calvin's memory for later designation. Condolences may be shared at bullocklongfuneralhome.com. The service will be streamed live at ziongrant.org.

Services will be on Friday, February 18, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church in Grant, with Rev. Michael Heckmann officiating. Burial will be in the Grant Fairview Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Thursday, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Bullock-Long Funeral Home in Grant.

Bonnie Dodson

Bonnie Dodson, of Norfolk, Nebraska, passed away at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation and Care Center in Norfolk, Nebraska. She was 95.

Bonnie was born on July 14, 1930, on the family farm northeast of Venango, Nebraska, to Clements and Evelyn (Watson) Ourada. She grew up on the family farm and attended Venango Elementary school before graduating from Grant High School with the class of 1948.

On December 9, 1948, she was married to Myron Dodson in Sterling, Colorado. The couple made their home in Venango, where they owned and operated the Dodson Mercantile grocery store, as well as branching out into laundromats in Ogallala and Julesburg. In 1971, the family started farming, and in 1975, they sold the family grocery store and farmed full-time.

Bonnie was a devoted farm wife and mother throughout the years. She helped run the family grocery store and provided wonderful meals for the family gatherings. The grandkids especially loved her crescent rolls, pies, and the many desserts. The highlight of harvest was the feasts she brought out to the fields for the crew. Nobody left hungry. The food that came from Bonnie's kitchen had a way of communicating her love and generosity.

Music was always a defining part of her life, as she would play the piano and organ and sing hymns nightly at home with her family often singing along into the evening. Sundays and holidays would be spent as a family at Lake McConaughy. Those moments, and many others, would come to change into beautiful memories, gilding the years of their young family.

For more than 60 years, Bonnie was a mainstay at church, where she played the piano and organ. After her children left the home, Bonnie enjoyed giving piano lessons over the years.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband, Myron Dodson; an infant son, Brent Dodson; her siblings, Jeannie (Don) Campbell, Verna Lee (Bob) McCone, Dale (Vickie) Ourada; sister-in-law, Norma Jean (Pike) McCormick, and brother-in-law, Merwin Dodson.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon (Jack) Johnson of North Carolina; a son, Scott (Patty) Dodson of Norfolk; five grandchildren, Kendra (Wayne) Dennis, Jared Johnson, Joshua (Ruth) Dodson, Christina (Zach) Bridgman, Tricia (Riley) Friesen; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, JoAnn Dodson of Holyoke, Colorado; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 12, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Venango Community Church with Pastors Kevin Hausman and Nathan Bice officiating. Burial will be at the Venango Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church prior to service time.

Fay Holzworth

Fay Joyce Holzworth, a devoted wife, loving mother, and servant of Christ, passed into the presence of the Lord on January 1, 2026, surrounded by her family at Scottsbluff Regional Medical Center in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, at the age of 81.

Fay was born on March 7, 1944, in Sutherland, Nebraska, to Harry and Anna (Schellenberg) Flaming. Fay grew up on the family farm in Ogallala and attended elementary school in the countryside one-room schoolhouse. She went on to complete her high school education at Ogallala High School and graduated in 1962. Fay pursued her higher education at Grace College of The Bible and graduated with her degree in 1965.

While attending Grace, Fay met the love of her life, Curtis Dean Holzworth, and they were married in Ogallala, Nebraska, on April 13, 1966. Curt and Fay initially made their home in Bloomfield, Montana, where they briefly oversaw Curt's childhood farm. This move was short-lived as Curt and Fay felt a calling to the ministry, and within a year, they returned to Omaha for Curt to complete his education at Grace. Upon Curt's graduation, they took their first ministry in Cozad, Nebraska. From the start, Fay played an integral role in each location they served. Fay loved music and was blessed with a beautiful voice and a love for the piano. Fay would continue to serve the Lord throughout their ministry from Menominee, MI, to the several communities throughout Nebraska in which they would serve, including Hershey, York, Grand Island, and Scottsbluff, among others.

Fay lived a life that can be best described by the Fruits of the Spirit according to Galatians 5:22-23: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control were all traits that guided Fay and touched the lives of so many. Her deep faith in Jesus Christ shaped everything she did, and she shared His love generously with everyone around her. A gifted musician, Fay blessed countless hearts through her talents. She played the piano beautifully and moved people with her lovely voice, often accompanied by Curt.

Above all, Fay loved the Lord and had a servant's heart. She consistently put others before herself, offering encouragement, compassion, and practical help wherever it was needed. Her tender heart and gentle spirit left an indelible mark on her family, friends, and church family.

Fay is survived by her beloved husband Curt, of Scottsbluff, her three children: Byron (Amy) Holzworth of Scottsbluff and their children Krista of Omaha, Haley of Lynchburg, VA, and Brooke of Laramie, WY, Brad Holzworth of Elkhorn, and Bennett (Suzanne) Holzworth and his children Cameron and Bel of Lincoln. Fay is also survived by her three siblings, Pat, Ivan (Delores), and Martin (Karen), all residing in Ogallala. She will be deeply missed, yet her legacy of faith, love, and music lives on in the lives she touched.

Fay was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Anna (Schellenberg) Flaming, and her brother-in-law Phil Ewert.

A memorial has been established in Fay's memory for Camp Rock Ministries of Bridgeport, NE. Condolences may be shared at prairiehillsfuneralhome.com, where the services will be streamed live.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Westway Christian Church in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, with Pastor Joel Hergert officiating.

Prairie Hills Funeral Home of Ogallala is in charge of arrangements.

In Fay's final moments, she quoted a passage from Isaiah 26 verses 3 & 4: "You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock."

Herbert Ruser

Herbert L. Ruser, 91, a longtime Ogallala resident, passed away December 31, 2025, at Burwell.

Herb was born August 20, 1934, in Ogallala, NE, to Herbert R. and Edna Lee (Paxton) Ruser. He graduated from Ogallala High School in 1951 at the age of 16. If he'd had it his way, he would have joined the Coast Guard after graduation. His mom encouraged him to attend college in Wichita, KS instead, which he did in 1951 & 1952.

Herb's love of cars led him back home to Ogallala to work for Searl's Cadillac dealership, where he sold cars with his dad. After a year there, he decided to go back to school in Milford for Autobody, where he graduated in 1955. While living in Milford, he joined the National Guard in 1954.

Herb met the love of his life, Charlotte Heinis, in 1957. After graduating from Milford, he was called into service in the Army, where he was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. He moved home for good after his discharge and started farming in Perkins Co. in 1958. Herb farmed for 46 years.

Herb and Charlotte were joined in marriage on October 13, 1962, in Ogallala. From there came the birth of their three daughters: Vicki Lyn, Cheryl Ann & Laurie Lee.

Herb was an avid lover of cars, always restoring, collecting, buying, selling, and constantly looking! He had a special place in his heart for shelter animals and enjoyed every pet rescued. Herb also loved music and spent ample time with his large record collection and singing in the choir. Tony Bennett, Nat King Cole, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir were among his favorites. He collected everything: records, hats, old bottles, coins, stamps, Husker memorabilia, and the list goes on. He loved all things Nebraska Cornhuskers and Kansas City Chiefs, playing cards, attending auctions (to add to his collections), being at the Lake, watching musicals (whether on tape or live in person), but if he could bend your ear to a story, you couldn't get away. Herb loved to tell stories, and his memory stuck with him to the end.

Most of all, he loved his wife, his children, his grand and great-grandchildren. He didn't like to miss events of any kind, but especially sports. He was always there on the sidelines, cheering or yelling, whatever the game entailed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, and his sister, Bonnie. Survivors include his wife Charlotte, of Ogallala, daughters Vicki (David) McBride of Clinton, MO, Cheryl (Kyle) Schow of Ogallala, and Laurie (Jason) Stimpfig of Redondo Beach, CA, 8 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of cards or flowers, please consider a donation in Herb's memory to the Perkins County Animal Shelter. Condolences may be shared at prairiehillsfuneralhome.com, where the services will be streamed live.

Services will be on Saturday, April 4, 2026, at 10 a.m. at the Prairie Hills Funeral Home Chapel in Ogallala. Private inurnment with military honors will be in the Ogallala Cemetery.
