MATTHEW EUGENE MURFIELD, 70, of Grant, former longtime Sioux City, IA, resident, passed away at his home on February 8, 2026, at Grant, NE.

Matthew was born June 16, 1955, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Lake and Dorothy (Castello) Murfield. He attended school in Sioux City and graduated from Bishop Heelan Catholic High School.

On May 27, 1977, Matt married his high school sweetheart, Kathleen J. Engel in Sioux City. They were blessed with four children: Melody, Megan, Matthew, and Miranda. The family made their home in Sioux City, where Matt worked in construction for several decades. He was an experienced finish carpenter and worked on numerous projects throughout Sioux City, including the Orpheum Theatre. In Matt's earlier life he enjoyed hosting golf brunches at his house, being a completive pool leaguer, playing softball, and spending time on his boat.

After moving to Grant in November of 2021, Matt made his home in a Quonset house on his daughter's property. He enjoyed working on his golf cart, had it up running again, and he was very proud of that. He enjoyed watching the boys farm and even got to enjoy a few times in the tractors. He had a fondness for animals, especially his dog Cochise.

Matt had a distinct ornery streak that kept people on their toes and kept the party going. He was a proud and patriotic man. After his wife Kathy passed away in 2016, those close to him knew his heart was never quite the same. It is comforting to know that he is reunited with his beloved, Kathy.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at the Sioux City Country Club from 1:00 to 4:00. Then join the family as they continue to celebrate Matthew at his favorite place.

He spent his early years between Kansas communities and attended school in the area. Robert proudly served his country in the United States Army, including service with the 82nd and 11th Airborne Divisions. He was stationed in Germany for 27 months. During his time overseas, he met the love of his life, Maria, who would become his wife. The two were married in Augsburg, Germany, in March of 1957.

Following his military discharge, Robert returned to the United States and lived in Kansas for a period before moving to Nebraska, residing near Sutherland, north of Arthur, and eventually settling in Paxton, where he made his home for many years. He worked in ranching, driving truck, and in most recent years, as a machinist. He was especially fond of ranch work and hunting, taking quiet satisfaction in a good dog and time spent outdoors.

Robert was affectionately known as "Doc," a nickname that followed him throughout his life. As a boy, he spent time with a grandfather who cared for stray dogs and cats, an example that left a lasting impression on Robert, who wanted to imitate him.

Robert was a member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of VFW Post 3755, which was something he was always proud of.

02/03/2026

Glenn B. Weaver Jr.

GLENN B. WEAVER Jr. of Julesburg, passed away February 2, 2026, at his daughter's home in St. Johns, Michigan.

Glenn was born on November 25, 1931, in Ithaca, MI, to Glenn and Burdene (Schaub) Weaver. Glenn was raised on the family farm in St. Johns, MI. In February of 1955, Glenn entered the US Army and was in the 11th Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, KY. While in service, in addition to serving as a 1st-class gunner and a paratrooper, he participated in 11 boxing matches and remained undefeated. He also made 30 successful parachute jumps. Following his discharge in 1957, he returned home and began working at Diamond Reo Trucking Company as a plant foreman while simultaneously working his parents' farm after his father's passing. He took great pride in the fact that no truck left Diamond Reo with any flaws, and the chrome shone bright. Throughout his career, he excelled as a problem solver, cut unnecessary waste, and achieved peak performance.

A few years later, Glenn married Judith "Judy" Gibbs on July 3, 1960, beginning a marriage that spanned more than six decades. Together, they were blessed with two children, Anne and Tim.

Glenn and Judy raised their family on their farm in St. Johns, Michigan. In 1980, after the kids were grown, they moved to Mesa, Arizona, where they lived for a time before leaving Arizona, traveling from Texas to Canada doing custom wheat harvesting, which eventually led them to set roots down in Julesburg, Colorado, and worked for the Carlson Ranch Company.

Glenn's values of working hard, taking pride in a job well done, loyalty, and honesty were passed down to his children. He and Judy shared an appreciation for the prairie and rural life that came with ranching. After Judy passed away, Glenn would eventually return to St. Johns, MI, where he was closer to family.

Glenn loved to share his childhood memories with others through stories of growing up during the Depression. His upbringing forged a deep respect for God, patriotism, land, nature, and family, and an integrity that made his firm handshake a binding contract. He was discerning, with some in the family likening him to Solomon. He would listen to both sides of an argument and act with wisdom, allowing others to make their own determinations.

A quiet and observant man, Glenn was a straight shooter who called things as he saw them. But when asked, he gave you the hard truth, whether you wanted to hear it or not. Glenn loved getting a good deal, be it a vehicle, cattle, or an antique that caught his eye. When purchasing a truck, he always told the salesman to have several sharpened pencils with good erasers ready, and had no problem walking away, which wasn't very often!

Glenn had a penchant for sweets, especially his nightly vanilla ice cream, even better when served with a slice of cherry pie.

Dad loved watching football, especially the Denver Broncos and the Detroit Lions, the rodeo, the PBR, and saddling up his horse, Cowboy, and riding the land with his wife.

Glenn was a longtime member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Julesburg.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife and soulmate, Judy, who passed away in September 2021; his parents, siblings, Grace (Suzy), Janice, Bill, Bob, Eileen, Joseph, and Diana.

Survivors include his children, Anne Weaver of St. Johns, Michigan, and Tim (Dena) Weaver of Pocatello, Idaho; grandchildren, Sara, Josh, Glen, and Garrett; great-grandchildren, Khaleesi, Logan, and Lincoln; sister Milene Tews of DeWitt, Michigan; sister-in-law, Nancy (Thomas) Thelen of Lyons, Michigan; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Memorials have been established in Glenn's memory to any of the following Julesburg Public Library, St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Sedgwick County 4-H, or Tunnel 2 Towers.

Condolences may be shared at prairiehillsjulesburg.com, where the Mass will be streamed live.

Shortly thereafter, they answered a call to serve as house parents for 12 missionary children with the Board of Missions for the General Conference Mennonite Church in Japan, just 15 years after the end of World War II. Following two years abroad, they returned to the United States and settled on the Regier family farm north of Madrid, Nebraska, where they lived for much of their married lives. Later, they built a retirement home in Grant, near the Westview Retirement Community where Ann moved following Ivan's death in 2023.

Throughout her life, Ann was dedicated to building bridges-between people, cultures, and community needs. Whether volunteering, educating, mentoring, managing, dreaming or ministering, she worked to make her community better.

For more than a decade Ann brought faraway Japanese culture and life practices to local schools and clubs through interactive presentations. She dedicated the use of her nursing degree to creating solutions to the challenges of aging in Perkins County and drawing others to this work. This included serving more than 20 years as director of nursing for the Golden Ours Convalescent Home, part of Perkins County Hospital, where she pioneered the integration of memory care and unique strategies for working with dementia patients.

In addition, Ann served on a number of regional and state boards dealing with health care for the elderly, helped launch her church's health committee, founded a local county home health agency, and established a fitness program (FROG) for those over 55.

Late in her career, Ann went to work as a consultant for Kolb & Associates, helping small rural communities build retirement facilities. This included one in her home community of Grant, NE, where the Westview Retirement Community was opened in 1993.

In June 2025, nearly two years after husband Ivan's death, Ann moved to Covenant Village Rehabilitation and Care Community in Westminster, Colorado, near where her youngest son Michael and grandson, Mateo, live.

She was preceded in death by parents, Peter P. and Edith Preheim; brothers Waldo, Delbert, Roland, Don and John; sisters Verna and Emma, and by her husband, Ivan Regier.

Survivors include her sons, Mark (Marlene Kroeker) Regier of Elkhart, Indiana, and Michael Regier of Denver, Colorado; one grandson, Mateo Regier; and her sister, Barb Carlson of Westminster, Colorado; and brother, Peter, of Marion, South Dakota.

Memorials are suggested to Bethel College, Kansas, or the Grant United Methodist Church. Condolences may be shared at bullocklongfuneralhome.com, where the services will be streamed live.

A Celebration of Life will be held May 1, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Grant United Methodist Church, with Pastor Spenser Johnson officiating. Interment of cremated remains will be in the Madrid Cemetery.

Bullock-Long Funeral Home of Grant is in charge of arrangements.
