What happens when teenagers trade their smartphones for sails, sea breeze, and responsibility for an entire week?
A recent Sea Scout sailing trek in the Florida Keys offered a powerful reminder of what happens when young people disconnect from screens and reconnect with the world around them.
For a week, a crew of teens chose to leave their cell phones behind as they learned sailing, navigation, snorkeling, cooking, and teamwork aboard a 41-foot sailboat. They rotated responsibilities, stood watch, prepared meals, and solved real challenges together, from dealing with rough weather to making navigation decisions.
What stood out most was their leadership, respect, and initiative. The scouts organized their own watch schedule, anticipated tasks before being asked, and reflected daily on what they learned using a โrose, bud, and thornโ discussion.
Programs like Sea Scouts continue to prove that Scouting builds confidence, leadership, and lifelong skills while helping young people discover that the best connections are often the ones made far from a screen.
