I decided to post some articles that I had written several years ago. This series of articles were in our local newspaper and I figured posting them would bring out some good points relating to orthodontic treatment.

I decided to write a series of articles relating specifically to orthodontics, which is the field of dentistry dealing with the position and alignment of the teeth. This will allow the people of the North Country to know the importance of the various dental problems that can arise if the teeth are not treated. It will also help you decide if you or a loved one would benefit from this type of treatment.
I would like this first article in the series to focus on a common myth relating to the age at which orthodontic treatment should begin. Many people think it is time to see a dentist for braces after all the baby teeth have come out. This typically would be 11-14 years of age, depending on the child’s development. This is not true. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends having a child evaluated no later than age 7.
There are various reasons for this, such as detecting jaw growth problems, crowding, impactions, deep bites, open bites, cross-bites and habits that would alter the normal position of the teeth. The various issues listed will be covered in greater detail in subsequent articles.
In many cases if early treatment is not done the treatment time in full braces will be a longer and more complex process. When growth is completed there are also less treatment options available. Early treatment would allow the dentist and patient to guide the jaw growth in a more favorable pattern. This would improve the appearance, speech and function of the child at an earlier age and decrease the length of time for full braces, if they are needed. Early treatment would also minimize, (but not eliminate) the possibility of extractions to align and fit the teeth into position.
Since I have chosen to write this series of articles on orthodontic treatment if you have questions please call our office and we will gladly offer you a free consult visit to see if you or a child would benefit from early treatment.
