“We’re not getting what we were paying for — or what we think we were paying for.”

For a little savings on insurance, Michiganders are paying a big price after an accident, struggling to receive the care they need to live their daily lives.

Kyle can’t walk for a year.
George is now living in an extended-stay hotel because his in-home care has been slashed.
Jenna is a young mom raising two kids who can no longer get caregivers to come every day, leaving her struggling to manage basic daily needs

The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) report makes one thing unmistakably clear: Michigan’s auto-insurance reforms have created real and harmful barriers to care for the very people the system was designed to protect.

A policy that saves drivers on premiums, strands injured survivors without access to medically necessary care, costing nearly 40 times the savings drivers receive each year.

We urge policymakers to confront these findings directly and protect all Michiganders.

Michigan’s auto no-fault crisis is still putting lives at risk — and home care providers see the impact every day.

Our latest op-ed in Bridge Michigan lays out why Michigan’s elected officials must take urgent action to restore access to care for crash survivors and stabilize the home-care system.

Read “Michigan must fix its auto no-fault crisis before more lives are lost” here:

Lawmakers have a real chance to redeem years of inaction. Restoring reasonable reimbursement rates for home care would have minimal impact on premiums, but could mean the difference between life at home and life in an institution.

Thank you to the Michigan Health Endowment Fund for its support of MHHA through this $220,000 grant, launching the Advancing Retention and Workforce Stability in Home Care initiative!

With more than 250,000 home care job openings projected between 2020 and 2030, this funding allows us to take a systems-based approach to improving the availability and quality of in-home care. It will also help advance statewide efforts to better support caregivers, particularly in rural and underserved communities, so older adults can receive the consistent, high-quality care they deserve.

MHHA will partner with MissionCare Collective and Humana to roll out the CoachUp Care digital platform, which will provide tools for real-time communication, recognition and workforce analytics. These digital engagement tools will connect caregivers with long-term resources and also address barriers that impact caregiver retention.

We are looking forward to the positive change these funds will have in shaping Michigan's direct care workforce for the future!
