Michigan’s economy hinges on the fact that its citizens are getting older and sicker.

The health care and private education services sector accounted for more than 55% of the state’s dismal private sector jobs growth in 2025. Private education, which includes private and parochial school staff, comprises a small portion of the overall combined sector, accounting for less than 1% of the sector’s total jobs in Michigan in 2024.

It follows a national trend, where the sector accounted for 547,000 new U.S. jobs last year, or about 75% of the nation’s entire job growth.

Overall, the state added a paltry 20,200 net jobs last year, a 0.52% increase over 2024, according to data from the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget. The overall U.S. economy added roughly 733,00 private sector jobs, representing a 0.54% gain.

The rise in health care jobs is a symptom of an aging population that’s living longer, but with more chronic illnesses.

Michigan has an average age nearing 45 years old, compared to just 35.5 years old in 2000. It’s also the 14th-oldest, compared to being the 29th oldest in 2001.
