We’re proud to share that Kindra Smith, our Nurse Liaison, will serve in leadership roles with the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) and the Michigan Organization for Nursing Leadership (MONL).

Kindra will serve on the AONL Membership Committee to support efforts to grow and engage nursing leaders at all levels and in all care settings nationwide. Her involvement on the MONL Board of Directors, as Membership Chair, is to lead committee meetings, set agendas, and represent the committee while providing updates to the MONL Board.

Through this work, Kindra is continuing to advance nursing leadership and strengthen the nursing community in Michigan and beyond.

2026 is the first year Baby Boomers turn 80. This milestone signals a major shift for the healthcare workforce.

Lightcast's 'The Rising Storm' report projects that from 2024–2032, the U.S. population will grow by 18 million people, while the labor force grows by just 2.3 million.

Healthcare is among the industries expected to feel the greatest strain.

Since 2020, 80% of those who have left the labor force are age 55+. At the same time, demand for roles such as home health aides continues to rise as the population ages.

One reality is clear: immigration is keeping the workforce afloat. All labor force growth since 2019 has come from foreign-born workers, who now make up one in four physicians, one in five registered nurses, and one in four health aides.

The workforce turbulence of 2021–2022 wasn’t a one-time disruption — it was an early signal of a longer-term demographic shift.

Healthcare leaders must plan now with coordinated, data-driven strategies to strengthen education pathways, improve retention, and align workforce policy with real labor market demand.

When worker shortages, and a wage-price spiral rocked the labor market in 2021-22 they didn’t represent a one-time disruption: they were the first gusts of a coming storm. Baby Boomers are retiring, and fewer younger workers are coming to take their place. What can be done?? The Rising Storm provi...

Apprenticeships are a powerful tool for strengthening Michigan’s healthcare workforce, expanding access to training, creating clear career pathways, and meeting employer needs.

We’re always glad to highlight how apprenticeship models are helping grow and sustain the healthcare talent pipeline across the state.

Traditionally used in manufacturing and skilled trades, health care apprenticeships benefit students, employees seeking advancement, and employers.
