Some fun action shots from the Liberation Jiu-Jitsu Summit at !

I had been wanting to get back into pressure-testing my martial arts skills, and between the Denver tournament last weekend and this, it feels like I dove head-first into the deep end, but it feels good! I can say for 100% certain that my tai chi practice has enhanced my overall fighting ability. I move in a way that’s much more connected and integrated and it’s helped both my stand-up and even my ground grappling! Looking forward to finding new opportunities to test myself in the near future!

There were many great internal martial artists on display at today, but WOW what a treat it was to watch ply her craft. She’s on another level and rightfully won the grand championship in the Internal category. If you’re in the Boston area, you would be lucky to have such a teacher!

So happy to join the folks as part of the Chen-style contingent at ! I ended the day with two gold medals, one for Chen-style open handed forms and one for push hands! The gold for forms came because there were literally 3 entrants in that category and we were all different age and experience levels, so we all got gold medals, but I actually did have to beat two people for the push hands medal! Martial skill = validated!

You know, all this talk of the tai chi workshop we’re running at next March, I just realized I never posted about how, back in the spring, I started training there, and now I’ve passed my first belt test! It’s been really fun to compare and contrast it with , and I’m excited to see how training both together deepens my understanding of principles!

I love . It’s what helped change the course of my life when I felt I was at a dead-end and gave me hope for the future again. I want to keep doing it until they put me in a box. Perhaps the greatest gift taijiquan has given me is the community of fellow practitioners and incredible teachers like and , which is why it feels like such an honor to receive any kind of formal recognition from them.

I’m now a certified assistant instructor within the Chen-Style Taijiquan network, which means I can run a local training group under the supervision of my teachers. My hope for this is that after we hold our workshop here in OKC in March, we can attract enough interest to maintain a regular group and spread the practice of Chen Yu’s gongfujia further across the US (and someday maybe further into the rest of the Americas)!

Cool things coming to ! Have you been wanting to learn , a style of that can enhance your striking and grappling skills as well as give you a mindful movement practice to build a better connection with your own body? Well, next March, has agreed to come teach an intro workshop at so we can hopefully help get a regular training group off the ground here! Watch this space for more details!
