Let’s talk about the Membrane Sweep!

Membrane Sweeping, also called Membrane Stripping or the “Stretch and Sweep,” is a way to *hopefully* cause labor to start.

It is usually offered anywhere from 37-39 weeks to avoid a woman from going over her due date.

HOW IT WORKS: Your cervix must be dilated enough for your provider to get one finger in. Your doctor or midwife will insert his/her/their finger into your cervical opening and sweep around, separating the amniotic sack from the cervical wall. This process will hopefully release hormones that will onset labor, like Prostaglandin, to soften cervix and jumpstart labor within 24-48 hours of your visit.

SOME IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE:

1. IT’S NOT A GUARANTEE THAT YOUR LABOR WILL START, IT’S JUST A HOPE.

2. EACH TIME YOUR CERVIX IS EXAMINED, RISK OF INFECTION INCREASES.

3. YOUR BABY MIGHT NOT BE READY. ASK
PROVIDER IF THERE ARE ANY RISKS IN WAITING ON SPONTANEOUS LABOR.

4. SOME WOMEN NOTE THAT THE COMFORT LEVEL VARIES FROM UNCOMFORTABLE TO PAINFUL.

Ultimately, the choice is yours! And we are grateful for wonderful tools and resources to be able to onset labor and bring you closer to your baby!

The next is that breast milk doesn’t sustain your baby’s appetite.

Your baby’s stomach is actually quite small for a while. The first day out of the womb it is only about the size of a marble and 5-7 ml of colostrum is about all baby needs. That’s less than an ounce! It’s nearly impossible to overfeed
as breastfed babies generally stop engaging in feeding once full and will usually fall asleep or completely relax. 😴 This in turn can decrease the risk for childhood obesity.

Also, if you’re a person who is worried about a decreased milk supply please understand that breast milk is “supply and demand!” Nurse your baby often, empty your breasts completely at feeding, and make sure to alternate the breast you offer at each feeding! Feel free to explore lactation teas, cookies, and supplements with careful counseling from your care team! 🤱🏽

Comfort is key during labor! 🔑You need to stay relaxed! Something as small as being in your own labor and delivery gown, that was washed, dried, and packed neatly in your go-bag that you’re 100% positive nobody has worn before you can bring you that much more peace, comfort, and joy to your birth experience! Make sure to check with your care team that they will be able to access all necessary areas during your labor with the birth gown that you purchase.

Baby Blue Doula Services recognizes and supports World Prematurity Day! 💜

Premature birth is defined by March of Dimes as birth that happens too soon, before 37 weeks of pregnancy.

Premature babies are at risk for life-threatening complications and life-long health issues.

Ways to reduce risk of premature birth on your end are:

•Not smoking and drinking during pregnancy

•Go to all prenatal care checkups, even if you feel fine

•Make sure your body is ready for pregnancy and address your own chronic health concerns before pregnancy if possible

•Research and know signs and symptoms of preterm labor.

Fun fact: I was a premie, born at only 4 lbs. and 2 oz!

One thing you may come across after having baby is that you smell…different. Although it may be unpleasant to you, this smell does have purpose!

1. You accumulate sooo much fluid during pregnancy due to amniotic fluid needs for the baby and also blood volume needed for placental transfusion to and from baby. So the way your body rids of all the excess is by causing you to sweat! 💦

2. Lochia is the discharge of blood and other postpartum elements like remnants of the placenta, amniotic fluid, and tissue after birth. It can occur up to six weeks after birth. The smell is often described as stale, musty, or metallic. Just think your body hasn’t had a period in 9+ months so it is flushing out a lot of built up blood!🩸

3. Your pheromones from your body may produce a strong smell, usually from your underarms. This scent helps your baby feed and also bond with you. 🤱🏽

If you experience postpartum odors, remember to hydrate to flush out toxins. If you cannot take a full shower, keep a wet cloth handy to wipe of your armpits and va**na. Consider wearing breathable garments made of cotton so sweat doesn’t get trapped. Also be mindful of putting excess deodorant on as the underarm area is close to the breast and baby could possible be exposed to that while feeding!

In the “Making Breastfeeding Easier” course we chatted about myths or misconceptions that can make bottle feeding seem like the better choice.

I am choosing to discuss these in a series called “Milk Myths”.

The first myth is that breastfeeding babies makes them spoiled.

The truth of the matter is that breastfeeding causes a deep emotional bond with your baby, and oxytocin is secreted during lactation (as discussed in two posts ago). This is called your “Happy Hormone” or your “Love Drug.” This is not secreted through bottle-feeding formula, so this can stimulate increased bonding and secure attachment to mama.

Also there are a plethora of benefits to breastfeeding baby including but not limited to: it causes your uterus to contract for that post-baby snap back, lower risk of childhood obesity and adult obesity, lower risk of cardiovascular disease, lower risk of childhood cancer and other cancers just to name a few!

Breastfeeding is hard, and ultimately a fed baby is the best baby! It’s important we have more conversations that spark the positives of breastfeeding as well so you can make an informed choice for your baby!

🤱 BREASTFEEDING FACT 🤱
Seeing others breastfeed increases the likelihood of breastfeeding.

The value of social support on a breastfeeding journey should never be underestimated! There is a strong correlation between having a strong community of support and meeting our own breastfeeding goals.

One very important piece of support is seeing other mothers breastfeed. Some of us never saw a baby eat from the breast until we had our own children. In many traditional cultures, where breastfeeding is not stigmatized, Children grow up seeing babies fed from the breast and are familiar with the process before they ever have babies of their own. This normalization and familiarity drives measurably higher breastfeeding rates.

Watch your friends and family breastfeed, learn, and breastfeed in public as you feel comfortable. You never know who might see you and be inspired! ❤️
