Today I passed my OSC, which is an Ophthalmic Scribing Certification! I highly recommend everyone get this certification, whether you have any others or not; it gives you an idea of what to expect with other certs, plus, it’s a great test of your knowledge!🎉🎉

Blindness is a Spectrum, but first let’s bust some blindness myths!
🧐 Blind people can’t see anything! FALSE! 93% of the blind community has some form of functioning vision. It could be blurry, cloudy, lights and shadows only, etc. Everyone is unique!
🧐 If they can look you in the eye(s), they can’t be blind. FALSE! We see with our brains, so hearing plays a part in it as well, so that can help guide them to looking in the right direction.
🧐 Blind people don’t need eye exams yearly. EXTRA FALSE!! Yearly eye exams are comprehensive and are about the health of your eyes as well. We still have to take care of blind eyes, as aside from sight, they still have the same things going on like cataracts, dry eyes, etc.
🧐Blind people HAVE to wear sunglasses. FALSE! It depends on why they’re blind and if their eyes are sensitive to the lights - indoor or out.
🧐When you lose your sight, all other senses get sharper. POSSIBLE! It would depend on a case by case situation, but most have a heightened sense of awareness that they rely on.

If you’re feeling stressed behind the phoropter because you feel like choosing 1 or 2 is going to mess up your prescription, please know that we’re already very close to your prescription when we offer you those options.

👀 Saying you’re not sure or “neither is clear” is still a helpful answer.
👀 Try your best not to squint, and don’t forget to blink when being tested.
👀 If you’re unsure, ask to see them again. We’re giving you minor adjustments when we’re at this point.
👀 We typically know what you’ll like versus what you won’t because at the end of the day, the math has to math!
👀 You CANNOT fail this test, so remember to breathe! While it is subjective, we’re still in control of the entire thing, and our job is to help you.

1. I wish more people knew/understood that there is no such thing as perfect vision. 20/20 is a set of numbers that people live and die by, but you could actually struggle with your 20/20 vision. We say we aim for 20/Happy, because that’s the best outcome.
2. Everyone has some form of dry eyes, even if they don’t feel dry. Your tear film has 3 layers that change consistency every time you blink. Using Preservative Free Artificial Tears definitely helps everyone. If your eyes water, they’re dry. Your brain is telling your eye to water to assist your tear film.
3. Don’t let any of our tests worry you or cause anxiety. If you’re being refracted (1 or 2) and are unsure, say so. We watch those numbers and know if it isn’t making sense. If it doesn’t, we silently start over and you never know. You can fail nothing in our offices.
