Happy Robyn Sunday-Allen Day!
Today we celebrate a leader whose impact reaches far beyond Oklahoma City Indian Clinic and into communities across the state and nation. When Governor Brad Henry proclaimed November 14 as Robyn Sunday-Allen Day, it was in recognition of her decades of service, leadership, and advocacy for Native health, an honor reflecting her extraordinary contributions to Oklahoma and Indian Country. Robyn’s leadership extends through her roles on several boards, including the National Council of Urban Indian Health (President-Elect), Oklahoma Quality Foundation, Leadership Oklahoma City, YMCA Greater OKC, New View Oklahoma, and Rotary Club 29. She is also a proud graduate of Leadership OKC Class XXIX and Leadership Oklahoma Class XXVI. Her accomplishments have earned national recognition: IHS Lifetime Achievement Award, Luana Reyes Leadership Award, AARP Excellence in Leadership, multiple Journal Record honors—including 50 Making a Difference and Most Admired CEO—and induction as the first CEO in Oklahoma’s Circle of Excellence. In 2022, she was named Oklahoma Mother of the Year. Join us in celebrating a visionary leader who continues to uplift our community every day. 💛

Native American Heritage Month Spotlight: Susie Walking Bear Yellowtail (1903–1981)
Born in Montana and educated in Indian boarding schools in Montana and Oklahoma, Susie Walking Bear Yellowtail made history as the first Crow Nation News - CNN registered nurse, and one of the first Native American registered nurses in the United States. Known as the “Grandmother of American Indian Nurses,” she dedicated her life to improving health care for Native people across the country. Yellowtail fought tirelessly against the forced sterilization of Native women without consent and helped create Community Health Representative programs to bridge cultural and language barriers in Native health care. Her leadership reached national levels, serving on the President’s Council on Indian Education and Nutrition and the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare’s Council on Indian Health. Shel was also a founding member of the American Indian Nurses Association (AINA) in the 1970's. Susie Yellowtail’s legacy continues to inspire generations of Native nurses and health care professionals who follow in her footsteps.

RSV is a contagious respiratory virus that can be dangerous for babies and young children. It is the leading cause of hospitalization in infants, with American Indian and Alaska Native children experiencing disproportionately higher rates of RSV-related hospitalization and ICU admission rates when compared to other U.S. infants. RSV immunization can protect our future storytellers and knowledge keepers. Talk to your provider today about RSV prevention. Call (405) 948-4900 to schedule an appointment.

Today, on Veterans Day, Oklahoma City Indian Clinic proudly honors the Native American men and women who have served our country with courage, dedication, and strength. Native Americans serve in the U.S. Armed Forces at higher rates per capita than any other group, carrying forward a long tradition of protecting their people and homeland. Their service reflects the deep values of honor, sacrifice, and community that continue to inspire us all. We thank every veteran for their bravery and commitment — today and every day. Friendly reminder that OKCIC is closed today to honor out veterans. We will open to regular business hours tomorrow.

We're still in awe over the success of our Red Feather Gala. We want to give a shout out to some very important people who worked with us on the event, because without them, we simply wouldn't have been so successful. Thank you to Ace Greenwood and Joleen Chaney for hosting, Ceremonial Chief Gordon Yellowman for the opening prayer, Brent Greenwood, Taylor Martin, and flutist Terry Tsotigh, DJ Emcee One for the after party music, Tony Wisely for running the auction, the incredible group of grass dancers, and finally, our fantastic group of volunteers from the OKCIC Volunteer Program and volunteers from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma. Thank you again for all your hard work and commitment to this years cause. It's never too late to donate to the Red Feather Gala. If you want to help, you can go here to give. https://cbo.io/app/public/bidapp/okcic/donate.
