(1)

DRTC promotes a disability-inclusive workforce, connecting people with employment opportunities in the Oklahoma City metro that fit their skills and interests. With offices across the state, DRTC trains or employs approximately 1,000 people with disabilities per year. In addition to community employment opportunities, DRTC operates the following programs and divisions:

Production Center -- DRTC can provide assembly, fulfillment, mailing, prep, labeling, packaging, folding and pre-staging services. Employment Services -- Award-winning program that assists people with disabilities to obtain and maintain community employment. Job Coaches work with employees to learn the job, at no cost to the employer, and eventually fades from the site as the worker becomes skilled at his/her job. Federal contracts -- DRTC holds contracts with federal entities, including Tinker Air Force Base., Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center at FAA, and federal buildings in downtown OKC. Mobile Workforce -- Participants receive paid vocational training and visit various work sites completing projects alongside a trained DRTC supervisor. DRTC Awards -- Employees craft custom trophies and awards, and hand sand, buff and polish acrylic awards. Both wholesale and retail customers are welcomed with DRTC’s one-of-a-kind service.

The legacy of Judith Heumann is woven into so many of the rights and protections people living with disabilities have today.

Often called the “Mother of the Disability Rights Movement,” Judith Heumann helped drive the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act and championed the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on a global scale. From suing to become New York City’s first wheelchair-using teacher to serving as Special Advisor for International Disability Rights under Barack Obama, her advocacy reshaped policy and possibility.

She reminded the world that disability is not a tragedy — barriers are.

Today, we honor her courage, her leadership, and the path she paved toward a more accessible, inclusive future. 💛

Today we’re celebrating International Wheelchair Day and the impact wheelchair users make in our workplaces and our community every single day.

Meet Kermit, one of our incredible Production team members and a Spotlight honoree in our Vocational Services Program.

The Vocational Services Program is all about real skills, real opportunities, and real community connection. While some roles are based on our main campus, about 82% of our programs happen out in the community across the Oklahoma City metro. That means people living with disabilities are working alongside other companies, building careers, and giving back through volunteer efforts at fellow nonprofits.

Disability Advocate Spotlight 🌟

Honoring Maya Angelou, disability advocate, poet, author, and civil rights leader whose life continues to inspire generations. While widely known for her literary brilliance and activism, her story also reflects powerful themes of disability, trauma, resilience, and reclaiming identity. After experiencing childhood trauma, she lived with selective mutism for years before finding her voice again through literature and mentorship.

Throughout her career, she uplifted marginalized communities, advocated for equity, and spoke openly about overcoming adversity. By sharing her lived experience, she helped challenge stigma around trauma and silence, showing that healing and advocacy can exist side by side.

Representation matters. Storytelling matters. And the courage to speak, especially after silence, is a form of advocacy that continues to move the world forward.

Our Story

When a group of parents of young children with developmental disabilities formed the Oklahoma County Council for Mentally Re****ed Children in 1953, they wanted a safe and caring place for their sons and daughters. That same year Dale Evans Rogers, one of the most popular celebrities of her time, published Angel Unaware, an inspiring account of the life of her daughter Robin. The child was born with mental retardation and died just before she turned two. Yet her life, though brief, brought great joy to her family. For the rest of her life, Dale Rogers attributed her family’s strong values and their faith to Robin. Angel Unaware opened the door for changes for people with disabilities as it reached millions who admired Dale and Roy Rogers for their candor and their devotion to their daughter. As a tribute to Dale, the parents named the school after her. By 1975 the young children of the families who founded the original Council were well beyond the age for public school. For their sake, and for hundreds like them, the Dale Rogers School began its transition from a school to a vocational training and employment center. Over the years the Dale Rogers Training Center, Inc. (DRTC) has grown at a steady pace, acquiring federal contracts, winning awards, and implementing mobile workforce groups. The Board of Directors does not want the agency to be perceived just as another charity. They want DRTC to earn its own way, to show that people with disabilities can do quality work , and – to a great extent – earn their own way. The self-sufficiency of the agency, as well as the individuals, continues to grow. In fact, some individuals at DRTC even choose to give volunteer hours to other non-profits to benefit those less fortunate than themselves. With more than 65 years of service, and continuing growth as an agency and as individuals, DRTC is proud to say we are the largest agency of our kind in the state of Oklahoma. How proud those pioneering parents and advocates from the 1950’s would be now! With the continued support of the Oklahoma City community, there is no limit to what DRTC can accomplish in the future as we continue blazing trails and building independence.
