🍎 ✏️ Shoutout to our amazing SLP fam here at OU Allied Health!

In honor of AAC Awareness Month, iLEAP hosted AAC specialist, Camber Moulton, MS, CCC-SLP with PRC-Saltillo, who presented an AAC workshop for the SLP graduate students! Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) helps people who cannot rely on their natural speech to communicate.

🧠 Our students gained practical knowledge that they will apply to the children in iLEAP that they work with. Thank you for your invaluable insight, Camber Moulton!

👟🏅This year's Rehab Sciences clinic facilitated by OT and PT students at the Tulsa Run was a HUGE SUCCESS!

Physical therapy faculty and students from the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at OU Health Campus provided post-run care consisting of soft tissue manual therapy, which included muscle stretching and myofascial release. 💪

❤️‍🩹 Volunteers also educated runners in exercises and activities to optimize their recovery and promote ongoing wellness!

These amazing student and staff volunteers are preparing to do it all again for the upcoming Route 66 run, so make sure to look out for them after the finish line!

👟❤️ Nutritional Sciences is back with hydration tips to get you race-day ready! Here's some important things to remember:

💧 Hydration is a full-time job! Sip water throughout the day, not all at once a few times a day.

💧 Sweating a lot? Replenishing fluids and sodium is key! Sports drinks contain a variable amount of sodium:
• Gatorade contains 160mg and LMNT contains 1,000mg (somewhere in between these two is great if you're exercising/sweating > 1 hour/day)
• Skratch, Liquid IV, Drip Drop, Gatorlyte: 400–500mg

💧 Sugar in these drinks helps fuel and recover. Salty foods before race day can help, too!

See you at the Tulsa Run on Oct 25 at our Rehab Sciences race-day recovery clinic! 🏃‍♂️

New research at the University of Oklahoma College of Allied Health is uncovering how children with cochlear implants may learn to speak 💬✨

Dr. Matthew Masapollo, a researcher at OU College of Allied Health, is studying how kids with cochlear implants and unclear sound signals may rely more on how speech *feels* than on what they hear. His work could lead to new therapies that focus on movement and touch, not just hearing 🦻 to help children find their voice.

First-year DPT and OTD students bring anatomy to life in the Principles of Human Movement!

By drawing peripheral nerves on each other’s arms, they visualize what they learned in anatomy while developing their “x-ray vision” — the ability to picture where nerves lie beneath the skin 🩻

This hands-on approach helps them connect structure with function and prepares them to better assess and treat future patients.

With the College of Allied Health Rehab Sciences department getting ready to help runners recover after the Tulsa Run this October, they decided to partner with the College of Allied Health Nutritional Sciences department for some running 101!

🏃‍♀️🍎 Race Day Fuel Tips
Fueling right can make or break your race! Here’s what to keep in mind:

🍝 3–4 hrs Before: Aim for a carb-rich meal (think pasta, rice, toast).
⏰ Spaghetti for breakfast not sound too appealing? Closer to your start time, stick to simple, easy-to-digest carbs.

🍌 Add a little protein to stay satisfied and avoid hunger pains! Foods like PB + banana on toast, or go lighter with applesauce, pretzels, or a sports drink if solids don’t sit well.

💧During the Race: Sip water + sports drinks at hydration stops.

🥨 Running > 1 Hour? Stay prepared with some carbs, too. Gels, pretzels, or even chewy candy can be good options.

🥛After the Finish Line: Refuel with protein + carbs (flavored milk, a bar, or a solid meal) to help repair muscle damage, and replace the stored energy you used during the race. Your body will thank you!

Practice your race-day eats during training so there's nothing new on race day! ✨ See you at the Tulsa Run on October 25th, Runners! 🏅

About the College of Allied Health

In 1967, the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education authorized the College of Allied Health. The College was activated in February 1970 to consolidate and coordinate existing programs on the OU Health Sciences Center campus and to further develop programs to meet allied health resource needs in Oklahoma. It serves as the academic unit for eleven diverse health science professions, post professional, and graduate degree programs. Its professional-entry educational programs prepare students to join a multidisciplinary health care delivery system focused on the well being of citizens of Oklahoma. Four of the eleven professional entry programs are the only programs in Oklahoma: Audiology, Nuclear Medicine, Occupational Therapy, and Radiation Therapy. College pass rate on professional entry Boards/Licensure examinations in the eleven professional-entry programs is 94.3%. Through its graduate programs, the College prepares future leadership, faculty, advanced practice clinicians, and researchers for the professions and Oklahoma.

The College is authorized to offer twenty-one programs: eight baccalaureate, twelve at the master or doctoral level, and one certificate program. Diagnosis of disease and disorders, wellness and prevention, therapeutic and rehabilitative services, health care administration, and allied health professions education encompass the spectrum of professional programs in the College of Allied Health. Faculty offer continuing education programs for practitioners in Oklahoma and region, and faculty development seminars for clinicians involved with professional-entry programs in the College. The College extended its accredited professional-entry programs in Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy to the OU branch campus in Tulsa in 1998. In 2002, the College offered OU's first web-based graduate degree program in Rehabilitation Sciences and in 2003 its first post-professional web-based undergraduate degree program in Radiation Sciences. The professional-entry accredited program in Sonography was extended to the OU-Tulsa campus in Fall 2006 and from Fall 2007-Spring 2017, the professional-entry accredited program in Radiography was extended to the OU-Tulsa campus.
