Johnson is a professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, College of Allied Health. She currently conducts her research in the Hearing Evaluation, Rehabilitation and Outcomes Laboratory (HERO) in the Department of Communication Sciences at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Her research focuses on auditory (re)habilitation, specifically on the impact of audiologic interventions for sensorineural hearing loss on patient outcomes and health-related quality of life. A current focus is the impact of and factors affecting intervention and treatment adherence at the onset of SNHL, particularly for patients with mild and moderate losses. The laboratory is also exploring the relationships between working memory and speech recognition in reverberation and noise and the impact of hearing aids in reducing cognitive load in adverse listening conditions.

Our Story

Dr. Carole E. The HERO Lab team is also working on developing a test battery for hidden hearing loss or cochlear synaptopathy. Hidden hearing loss is auditory damage that does not manifest itself on routine audiologic tests, yet patients complain of difficulty understanding speech in background noise. Patients with hidden hearing loss are believed to have cochlear synaptopathy in which there is a deafferentation of spiral ganglion cells from the inner sensory hair cells. Developing a test battery for this condition will be useful in the prevention of early intervention of hearing loss.
