I often recommend my clients find some way to “play”. Play means so many things to so many people. Examples of play, include but definitely limited to: creating art, crafting, exercising, cooking, skating, dance reading or going out with friends.

Play is an important piece of self care. Cultivating play leads to less stress and negativity and more relaxation and self-confidence.

My play time usually includes some kind of creativity. I love painting, creating art and DIY projects.

This piece holds a special place in my heart! I’m a proud Nigerian American so I’m often looking for ways to incorporate my culture into my art! The head wrap on this African Queen was created with material from one of my traditional outfits and her face was created with gold leaf. During Black History Month, I’m challenging myself to a daily post of some form of art related to my culture. Happy Black History Month!!✊🏽✊🏽

Posted • How many times have you been told to “follow your passion”? It’s a message that appears in everything from graduation speeches to job ads. But according to a recent Deloitte survey of 3,000 full-time U.S. workers across job levels and industries, only 20% say they are truly passionate about their work.

How do we fix this conundrum? Research on passion suggests that we need to understand three key things: (1) Passion is not something one finds, but rather, it is something to be developed. If your job does not allow you to pursue your passion, or if you just don’t want to do so at work, you can find time and space to pursue activities you are passionate about outside of your job. (2) It is challenging to pursue your passion, especially as it wanes over time. So if you just focus on following happiness, you might not stick with an endeavor like you would if you focused on how it helps you achieve what you care most about. When you’re pursuing your passion, it’s important to bear in mind that resilience is key, because the pursuit of passion is an ongoing—and challenging—process. (3) Passion can lead us astray, and it is therefore important to recognize its limits. Regularly seek out feedback from others and clarify where you truly stand; otherwise you may believe that your passion propels you, while it only does so in your head.

To be honest, the last few months I’ve struggled between staying strong and shedding tears. Seeing hatred and racism, can take its toll on anyone. Not feeling like you’re being heard by your doctor can leave you feeling hopeless. This is being black in America. Staying quiet and suffering silently is not the answer. I have asked Abigael Maxwell, MD FAAP Neonatologist & Belema Helaire, LPC to lead us in the conversation around what we need to know about black health and mental health. In this Spill The Tea, we will be working towards gaining knowledge and the healing we need to help US. ⁣⁣

This is a FREE event and open to ALL! It will be held via ZOOM on September 2nd at 7 p.m E.T. Send me a message to get more information to attend! ⁣⁣

Many of us are experiencing intense emotions right now. This video provides healthy ways to detach from those emotions, so that you can process and learn from those same emotions and triggers.

Your thoughts have real and measurable effects on your body and brain. Your immune cells know your deepest feelings.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Your stem cells are wired to your brain and help you repair and regenerate. But they only turn on and make new brain cells when you relax. And I don't mean sipping a glass of Chardonnay while watching TV or practicing retail therapy. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
In school, we all learned how to read and write, but we never learned how to use our minds to help us with the most important survival skills of all: staying happy and healthy! Research has shown over and over again that learning to relax is one of the most important keys to long-term health and vitality. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
To engage the powerful forces of the mind on the body, you must DO something. Learn how to ACTIVELY relax. ⠀⁣
⠀⁣
Whether you practice deep breathing or take a simple leisurely walk, find an active relaxation that works for you and do it. Here are a few more ideas on how to push your pause button:⠀⁣
⠀⁣
1) Make choices that make your life balanced — practice saying “NO” to others and “YES” to yourself.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
2) Try yoga or meditation.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
3) Get enough sleep.⠀⁣
⠀⁣
4) Eat whole foods that decrease the stress response.⠀
