A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that results from a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. This sudden movement can cause the brain to bounce or even twist inside the skull, stretching and damaging brain cells and creating chemical changes in the brain. To learn about the signs and symptoms of a concussion and how to reduce your risk, visit Oklahoma.gov/health/concussion.

For years, the NE OKC Community & Cultural Center has provided free daily meals and other crucial programming to our neighbors — no questions asked.
As our community faces rising costs and ongoing challenges, programs like this one matter more than ever. If you or someone you know could use a warm meal, stop by 3815 N Kelley Ave any day between 3–6 PM.
And if you’re able, consider donating or spreading the word to help sustain this vital community effort. It takes a village!
*We want to clarify that this is not NEOKCR’s programming, but a longstanding community effort. This is also not programming via the Northeast OKC Neighborhood Coalition, but a separate entity. Please support!

In the late 1980's in New Orleans, Louisiana, Margaret Austin was completing Clinical Pastoral Education. She became aware of rooms no one visited and the doors remained closed. She discovered the people behind those doors had AIDS. Margaret asked who was attending to their pastoral needs and found many had no support. She knew this had to change.
During this time, Oklahoma’s Mary Catherine Smothermon was dealing with the AIDS related illness of her son. Following his death, she felt called to support others with HIV/AIDS. She stepped out in faith, quit her job, and began preparing for her next "assignment.”
Ms. Smotherman studied, grieved, prayed, and obtained certification as an AIDS Educator/Counselor and volunteered for the AIDS Support Program. Early in 1990, the two women met. The dream of one became the answer to the other and RAIN Oklahoma became a reality.
The program was simple. Through training and education, volunteers worked to dispel the fear, stigma and misconceptions surrounding HIV/AIDS. Volunteers began providing support services for those with HIV/AIDS. The support included preparing meals, running errands, cleaning the house, mowing the lawn, giving rides to doctor's appointments, taking the dog to the vet and emotional support.
The RAIN Team became an extended family for those living with HIV/AIDS.
In 2005, RAIN merged with CarePoint, Inc., an organization providing free HIV testing, Ryan White Case Management Services, housing support, and prevention education.
Access to new treatment options, coordinated case management, regular medical care, housing and transportation assistance, dental and mental health services have changed the lives of most HIV positive individuals. With appropriate treatment those with HIV can live long, productive lives.
Today, RAIN Oklahoma serves more than 1,000 HIV positive Oklahomans and their families. The ADvantage Medicaid Waiver Program provides in-home services for elderly, disabled or chronically ill Oklahomans (not necessarily HIV positive).
