This image is of Lt. Rick Rescorla, an Army infantry officer who was photographed as he fixed his bayonet in the Ia Drang Valley in 1965. The image graced the cover of the first edition of the book, We Were Soldiers Once and Young, written by Lt. Gen. Hal Moore and Joe Galloway.

Rescorla would earn a Silver Star and Purple Heart and other awards, surviving the famously fierce battle. During battles, he was known for singing battle hymns which helped calm those around him. He went on to serve in the Army Reserve until his retirement as a colonel in the 1990s.

On Sept. 11, 2001, Rescorla was a director of security in the south tower of the World Trade Center. After the aircraft hit, Rescorla went up into the towers to help people evacuate. Evacuees who were helped by Rescorla said that through the smoke they could hear a man singing so they followed the sound which led them to Rescorla. He directed them to safety, down and out of the building.

He is credited with saving more than 2,700 lives. He was last seen climbing higher into the towers with his security team to help those that were trapped in the higher floors who still needed help. His body was never found.

Media Advisory

Saturday marks the start of mandatory 10 digit dialing in the 405

Businesses and residents who have not yet prepared for 10-digit dialing of local calls within the 405 area code should do so now.

Saturday is the day when 10-digit dialing for local 405 calls becomes mandatory, ending the period when local calls could be completed either with 7 digits or 10 digits (405 + local number.)

The move to 10-digit dialing for local 405 area code calls is necessary to enable the addition of another area code for the area currently served by only 405. The new, additional area code (572) is needed to ensure there will be enough telephone numbers available for the area.

Existing phone numbers will not change, and what is currently a local call will remain a local call.

Residents and businesses should make an inventory of all devices that may use telephone numbers, including such things as security systems, office telecommunication systems, certain inventory systems, etc., and make sure the systems/devices are set up for 10-digit dialing for local 405 area code calls.

Here is the schedule for local-call 10-digit dialing within the 405 area code and the addition of the 572 area code:

April 24, 2021 – Mandatory 10-digit dialing begins. All local calls within the 405 area code will require the area code + local number.

May 24, 2021 – 572 area code added to the area that had been served only by 405.

The area currently served by the 405 area code is the second area in Oklahoma to institute 10 digit dialing. The first was the area served by the 918 area code, which is now served by both the 918 and 539 area codes. 539 was added in 2011.

Joint CDC and FDA Statement on Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 Vaccine

The following statement is attributed to Dr. Anne Schuchat, Principal Deputy Director of the CDC and Dr. Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research

As of April 12, more than 6.8 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen ) vaccine have been administered in the U.S. CDC and FDA are reviewing data involving six reported U.S. cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot in individuals after receiving the J&J vaccine. In these cases, a type of blood clot called cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) was seen in combination with low levels of blood platelets (thrombocytopenia). All six cases occurred among women between the ages of 18 and 48, and symptoms occurred 6 to 13 days after vaccination. Treatment of this specific type of blood clot is different from the treatment that might typically be administered. Usually, an anticoagulant drug called heparin is used to treat blood clots. In this setting, administration of heparin may be dangerous, and alternative treatments need to be given.

CDC will convene a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) on Wednesday to further review these cases and assess their potential significance. FDA will review that analysis as it also investigates these cases. Until that process is complete, we are recommending a pause in the use of this vaccine out of an abundance of caution. This is important, in part, to ensure that the health care provider community is aware of the potential for these adverse events and can plan for proper recognition and management due to the unique treatment required with this type of blood clot.

Right now, these adverse events appear to be extremely rare. COVID-19 vaccine safety is a top priority for the federal government, and we take all reports of health problems following COVID-19 vaccination very seriously. People who have received the J&J vaccine who develop severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath within three weeks after vaccination should contact their health care provider. Health care providers are asked to report adverse events to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System at https://vaers.hhs.gov/reportevent.html.

CDC and FDA will provide additional information and answer questions later today at a media briefing. A recording of that media call will be available on the FDA’s YouTube channel.

VAERS is a passive reporting system, meaning it relies on individuals to send in reports of their experiences. Anyone can submit a report to VAERS, including parents and patients.
