More and more research points to droplets in confined environments as a likely means of transferring Covid-19. When my practice resumes, this will mean masks, extra measures for air circulation, and no unnecessary talking during a session.

This is painful because I dearly love the conversation that sometimes occurs during massage. And some clients seem to truly relax only when they can talk. Verbal connection is important, but not at the expense of one's health.

Speech droplets generated by asymptomatic carriers of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are increasingly considered to be a likely mode of disease transmission. Highly sensitive laser light scattering observations have revealed that loud speech can emit thousands of oral f...

Blood clotting has always been a contraindication for massage therapy. The pressure from massage can potentially dislodge clots which then travel up the body and cause sometimes fatal damage to the heart, lungs, or brain.

More information is needed on this very worrisome effect of Covid-19. But recent reports indicate that clotting complications can show up even in recovered patients.

Another threat from the lung virus that causes Covid-19 has emerged that may cause swift, sometimes fatal damage: blood clots.

This blog post from a respected nonprofit massage therapy education and research institution is worth a read. The author likens the current massage therapy landscape to a dangerous game of hot potato. No one - state governing boards, professional organizations, local governments, and insurance providers, is willing to step up and take leadership. When massage therapists seek guidance on what is safe and ethical, the potato gets tossed around endlessly.

These entities provide lists of suggested best practices for returning for work, but all these lists point to the fact that being in close contact, TOUCHING other people for prolonged periods, just isn't safe yet. Put in plexiglass in your lobby, set up contactless payment methods! Great, but don't those measures just highlight the danger of practicing massage?

It's maddening and so painful.

I still don't have a projected timeframe for when I will reopen, but until our infection rates are trending down, I will hold off.

Worst. Game. Ever. May 4, 2020 By Cal Cates If another AMTA chapter president calls or emails me for advice and love, I’m going to reach out to National for alimony. I love AMTA chapter leaders. Always have. They are the hard-scrabble true advocates on the ground who really know and care about mas...

Hello Clients and Friends and OKC Community,

Over the past six weeks since temporarily closing, I have missed my work terribly. I miss connecting with clients and helping people cope with stress and pain. What a time to have to suspend massage therapy, when the world could use it most! Unfortunately, because of the intimate nature of bodywork, the close quarters necessary, and the alarming new evidence of Covid-19 related blood clotting, I cannot yet resume my practice in good conscience.

Even though the Governor has decreed that massage studios (and geez, can we please stop calling them "massage parlors"?!) can reopen starting May 1st, this is not sufficient reassurance that it's wise to do so. Adagio Healing will remain closed until I feel confident it is safe to practice again. In the coming days, I will share some of the articles and content that has informed my thinking on this.

In the meantime, I encourage you to engage in mindfulness meditation, yoga, tai chi, and other exercises that connect your mind and body. Be kind to yourself. And please be patient with those of us in the massage industry as we try to navigate uncharted territory.
